Journal Club 8/12/19

Pre-reflection:

This will be my first journal club as a resident. I am moderately nervous about facilitating a
quality discussion, as it is difficult to know how students will participate. I hope to ensure this activity
will be meaningful and interesting. I plan to randomly have students present different parts of the article
and provide insights. I would like to ask basic and higher level questions to critique and apply this article
into clinical practice. In order to feel successful, I hope to provide a positive environment, encourage
non-judgmental participation, and provide correct information for questions.

Post-reflection:

There were 5 students, 2 residents, and 2 pharmacist preceptors in attendance to this meeting.
Upon assessing the student evaluations, they appreciated the low pressure environment. I felt
comfortable talking and facilitating in general. I would like to improve my organization with notes and
preparation for questions. I felt like I had much more to offer but within that moment, I couldn’t
remember. I would like to ask more probing questions to facilitate deeper thinking and learning
opportunities. I will need to gain confidence with my own journal evaluation skills as I grow with this
type of presentation. Next time, I will have my critiques and questions easily accessible. Over all, the
students stated they learned and enjoyed the discussion. I feel like it went well for my first attempt.
