Reflection: Doctor’s Day, Poison Prevention

Pre-reflection:

Doctor’s Day is an event held at the downtown Science Central facility. It is a day focused on
health and safety information for children and their guardians. I will be running a table with my two co-
residents. We plan to discuss poison prevention. We have a spinning wheel created for our booth where
kids will spin the wheel and then decide which picture is poison and which one is not. The images are
very similar and focus of medications vs. candy. We will also give resources to parents regarding poison
prevention and access to the local poison control center. I am excited about this day as I enjoy working
with children. I believe that they will have fun at our booth and hopefully remember one fact to keep
them safe.

Post-reflection:

This event went smoothly with a consistent flow of children and parents stopping by our booth.
They really enjoyed the hand’s on learning with the spinning wheel and we were able to teach them
simple and quick safety information about potential dangers in their home. Both adults and children
asked questions throughout the day. It was somewhat exhausting to repeat the same information
repetitively but was a rewarding experience through positive interactions. I enjoyed speaking to children
and seeing the curiosity in their eyes. I had to be careful to ensure I spoke on a level the child would
understand. It was a challenge to accommodate all age groups but was great practice for my
professional growth.
