Vancomycin AUC-guided dosing

Pre-reflection:
As part of my research project, I will be educating Lutheran hospital pharmacists about the
revised IDSA therapeutic vancomycin guidelines and the Bayesian approach to obtaining an area under
the curve (AUC) to MIC value for dosing. Lutheran is in active process of obtaining a Bayesian software
for our pharmacists to implement this new recommendation. I have created an interactive power point
that focuses on an overview of key concepts and literature. I hope to provide awareness and the
rationale for the new recommendation. This is a basic step in the process of change and will aid the
progressive learning of the new software, once available. I have ensured that my slides are visually
appealing in regard to color, spacing, size, images, and effects. I have implemented repetition of
important concept/facts, which is helpful for memory retention. I have incorporated check point slides,
asking questions over the information I would like them to remember most, and used power point in a
way that the learner can click on the multiple choice question to determine correctness. I would like to
provide a video option with the power point if I can determine the means to do so. Lastly, I will be
working closely with an infectious disease pharmacist to ensure information correctness and provide
constructive feedback.

Post-reflection:
I have given eight sessions of my vancomycin AUC-based Bayesian dosing sessions to the
pharmacists in my facility. Other network pharmacists were able to call in and follow along via a
conference call. I have had great attendance and participation. This topic is of great interest for this
population and my feedback has been very positive regarding my slides and speaking style. I have had
some critique points regarding the technology for the conference call that I have adapted to for the
subsequent sessions. The location is a rather small room and some days had a large amount of
attendees. I ran out of handouts and had technical issues on the first afternoon session but adapted well
for a good presentation. I appreciated the questions and I continued to learn and practice presentation
skills. I had to overcome my anxiety with presenting “review” information as well as my deliberate
efforts to repeat important information. As I love to listen to important information repeatedly and see
it visually in different ways, it felt awkward talking through it. By being transparent and explaining why I
was saying information differently made me feel more comfortable. Overall, this has been a new
experience for me and it went very well. I definitely feel like this has helped me grow as a presenter and
educator.
