FORM SIX
1. (a) (i) By the method of dimensional analysis, derive the relation:
1
s=ut+ a t 2
2
Where the letters have their usual meanings.
(ii) By using dimension prove that 1J =107 ergs.
(b) (i) The value of the acceleration due to gravity is 980cms-2. What will be its value, if
the unit of length is kilometre and that of time is minute? Hint: use dimension
(ii) Check the correctness of the relation:
rρg
h=
2 S cos θ
where h is height, r is radius, ρ is density, S is surface tension and g is
acceleration due to gravity.
(c) Write down the dimensional formula of mass if velocity of light c, Plank’s constant h
and gravitational constant G are chosen as basic quantities.

2. (a) (i) which of the following is most accurate and why? 20.0g, 0.0002g or 2.0g.

(ii) In the formula shown below, which quantity should be measured more accurate
and why?

L
T =2 π

(ii) A person takes 10 observations in an experiment. If he repeats the same experiment

by taking 50 observations, how is the probable error affected?
(c) Time for 20 oscillations of a pendulum is measured as t1= 39.6s; t2= 39.9s and
t3=39.5s. What is the precision in the measurements? What is the accuracy of the
measurement? Hint: express your answers in seconds not percentages form.
