Experiment # __

SUNSET
NAME: SECTION:
Objectives:
At the end of the experiment, the student should be able to:
1. determine what is the natural phenomena behind this activity; and
2. know why do we still sometimes see the Sun after it was gone down the horizon.
Materials:
Glass Bowl
Water (representation of atmosphere)
Clay
Coin (representation of the Sun)
Procedure:
1. Form the clay like a circular ball and put it at the center of the glass bowl.
2. After that, put the coin on the top of the formed clay.
3. Stand near the table so that you can see the entire coin.
4. Slowly move backward until the coin is just nearly out of sight (this will dissimulate the sunset). *notice
that the coin is obscured by the bowl rim.
5. Let one of your team add the water to the glass bowl.
6. Out of the procedure make a prediction.

Prediction:

Observations:

When the water is underneath the coin

When the water reaches the coin

When the water overlapped the coin

1. When the water reaches the coin, what did you observe?

1. When the water reaches the coin, nothing happens.
2. When the water overlapped the coin, you can see the coin even if you are far away from it.
3. Atmospheric refraction
4.  This is because of the refraction of the light from the Sun by the Earth's atmosphere--the Earth's
atmosphere bends the path of the light so that we see the Sun in a position slightly different from where
it really is.
5. Yes. Earth's atmosphere bends the path of the light so that we see the Sun in a position slightly different
from where it really is.
