ABSTRACT OF THE REPORT
EXISTING 2 (TWO) STORIED BUILDING FOR APEX WEAVING & FINISHING MILLS Ltd
AT EAST CHANDORA, SHAFIPUR, GAZIPUR

We performed the structural design & Design report-

 All structural elements such as column, beam, footing and slab have been checked.
 All members are inadequate according to BNBC standard.
 Strengthening has been proposed in case of both situation (Existing and horizontal
extension of the existing building)

A detailed calculation and analysis has been described in the rest of the report.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Existing 2 storied APEX WEAVING & FINISHING MILLS Ltd AT EAST CHANDORA, SHAFIPUR,
GAZIPUR Has been analyzed for different loading conditions & different load combinations
accordingly. This report summarizes the analysis and design related data

2.0 BASIC INFORMATION OF THE BUILDINGS

The building has been eight storied RCC building. This is a beam-column RCC

frame. The vertical gravity load & lateral load of the building is carried by RCC

columns to foundations. The lateral load arising from wind & earth quake is taken by

framing action of beam-column system. The beams and columns have not sufficient

capacity to carry the lateral loads arising from wind & earth quake.

3.0 LIMITATIONS

To produce the design report of this project we have some limitations. It was unable
to collect all the data from every sections of every member. We have collect data
from some specific locations of specific members.

4.0 METHODOLOGY

The following methodology has been used for the DEA of above
mentioned building.
1. We surveyed the site to collect information. Required
measurements were made to form an accurate as built
drawings.
2. We have performed ferro scan to collect the information
of the existing reinforcement so that we can prepare
accurate structural drawing.
3. We have performed core cutting test to find out the
concrete strength.
4. When the above information collection has been
completed we made a computer based 3d model of the
whole structure to simulate the actions of vertical and
lateral loads on the structure.
5. Depending on the analysis we proposed the required
strengthening of the existing structure.
6. A controlled loading plan has been made considering
column capacity and floor plate capacity
7. We have also collected information of the foundation by
earth excavation.
8. Finally based on the above steps the DEA report has been prepared.

5.4 Definitions of Load

Dead Load:

Dead load is the vertical load due to the self-weight of the permanent structural and
non-structural component of a building, e.g. Foundation, column, beam, walls,
ceilings, permanent partitions and fixed service equipment.

Unit weight of materials and the calculation of design dead loads are according to
section-2.2, Chapter-2, part-6, BNBC-Page6-22

Load ID Applied loads

Self-weight Actual weight of the columns, beams, slabs.
Partition Wall load on Distributed actual Partition wall loads on panel where applicable.
floor
Distributed actual wall loads on beam as line loads where

Live Load:

Live load is the load superimposed by the use or occupancy of the building not
including the environmental loads such as wind load, rain load, and earth quake load.
Dead load. (Ref. BNBC, Part-6, Chapter-2, Sec-2.3.2)

But it should be not less than the minimum floor live load. (Ref. BNBC, Part-6,
Chapter-2, Sec-2.3.3)

Wind Load:

The calculation of wind load confirms the sub-clause 2.4, Chapter 2, Part-6 of BNBC.
The following equation has been used to calculate sustained wind pressure of the
structure.

Pz=CgCpCcCiCzVb2 [BNBC, 2.4.6.2, 2.4.6.3 Page-6-33, 6-34]

Wind load was applied in two orthogonal directions X and Y.
The following parameters are considered

1. Design wind speed =215 km/hr

2. Exposure Type =A
3. Importance factor, I = 1.0

Earth quake Load:

As per specifications of BNBC, Part-6, Chapter-2, section-2.5.51, Equivalent Static

Force Method can be applied to calculate the earth quake force of this structure.

8.3. Story Drift (at existing condition)

Fundamental Period T = Ct (52)3/4

Numerical coefficient Ct = 0.03 for reinforced concrete moment resisting frames.
Height of building, hn =52 ft
Fundamental Period, T= 0.03 x (52)3/4 = 0.58<0.70,
Allowable Story Drift = 0.04h/R=0.03 x 91.56/5=0.42 inch
Or 0.005h = 0.005 x 52= 0.26 inch.
Maximum drift at roof for Earthquake load EQx = 0.05 inch
Maximum drift at roof for Earthquake load EQy = 0.12 inch

Maximum drift = 0.12 inch ≤ Allowable drift = 0.26 inch

For both cases the drift is less than the allowable limit. So the building is ok for drift.

Storey drift limit with in range.

8.4. Sway Study: at existing condition
Sway consideration is an important factor since serviceability of a structure
fails if the magnitude of sway becomes greater than maximum allowable
sway of the structure. The displacement of the structure in both short
direction and long direction has been tabulated below.
Lateral Displacements Check:
Max. DeflectionAllowable Deflection Limit
Load Case Remarks
(in) (in)
WX 4.15 52*12/360 =1.733 NOT OK
WY 6.7 52*12/360 =1.733 NOT OK

For both case the Lateral displacement cross the allowable limit

9.1. Design Concluding Remarks
Conclusion has been made according to NTPA load and load factor,
 Foundation: All foundation is fail ok in area & punching.
 Columns: Due to gravity load only, all columns are found
inadequate at 1st& 2nd floor.
 Beams: All grade beams & floor beams section and reinforcement for positive &
negative moment is found adequate.
 Slabs: Slabs are found adequate.
 Sway: Lateral displacement of the structure cross the acceptable
limit.

9.2 Recommendations
Columns are found inadequate both for gravity load combination and lateral load
combination. Therefore, all Column need to be retrofit.

9.3. CONCLUSION

Following are the conclusion drawn from the results of the above investigative studies:
During model analysis floor live load is consider 42 psf & store live load is 84 consider on all
over area. So the factory can use storage area at mentioned in load diagram but capacity
should be maintained within limit.
From the observations of extracted concrete core samples (i.e., brick aggregates& stone
aggregate), it is evident that the extracted samples are uniform, homogeneous and free from
voids / honeycombs.
From the computer model analysis and design verifications, it is inferred that most of the
existing RCC columns structurally not adequate to resist the loads considered in the
analysis so required to retrofit.
All grade beams & floor beams section and reinforcement for positive & negative moment
are found adequate, so don’t need to retrofit these beams.
All foundation is found adequate in area & punching at NTPA load combination.
