1. Purpose:
To provide Standard Operating Procedure for Transalkylation reactor drying and associated equipments in
start up service in a safe and efficient manner.
In case of failure of the Transalkylation Reactor drying, plant will have much water in the system and
catalyst life will be shortened and Cumene Plant has to take shut down.
While temperature is not controlled during drying activities, catalyst could be damaged .

7. Process Description:
The catalyst in the Transalkylation reactor contains of moisture that is picked up during transportation to site,
during storage on site and when the catalyst is loaded into the reactors. This moisture is extracted from the
catalyst with circulating dry benzene at elevated temperature and is removed from the system via the
Benzene Column Reflux Drum water boot.
8. Operating Tasks:
9.1. Chemistry
C6H6 Benzene
9.2. Physical properties
Benzene is liquid material, colorless, sweet odor which is extremely hazardous.
As a liquid, vapor, or mist is readily absorbed through the skin, mucous membranes, gastrointestinal and
respiratory tracts, and can cause cancer .
Moisture that present in the catalyst and the system to be removed less than 100 wt ppm by
circulating dry benzene at elevated temperature. To avoid catalyst damage during this stage, drying
progress to be controlled in range of temperature difference between circulated benzene and the
top of catalyst bed is less than 28 oC.
Benzene is line up into the start up heater to increase temperature by controlling the outlet
temperature against high pressure steam flow.
510-TIC-050 temperature indication control of recycle inlet of transalkylation reactor , with high
and low alarm temperature on DCS
11. Interlocks:
1. 510-S-002 Low low recycle benzene flow Close FV-008/050, ESV-117, ESD-116
5. 510-S-009 Low low level in V-51021 , ESD Close HV-121 and stop P-51021 A/B
pushbutton on console at UCB or at
field
510-HV-121 not open Stop P-51021 A/B
ESD pushbutton on console at UCB or Close HV-122 and stop P-51024 A/B
at field
12.1. Temperature difference between recycle benzene and top catalyst bed is not more than 28oC
12.2. Reactor outlet moisture content to be less than 100 wt ppm
Flammable, toxic – cancer hazard ( TLV 2.5 ppm), causes skin irritation.
Concentrations in system 99.71 wt %
14. Environmental:
14.1. Air :
It will usually either break down or decompose over a few days, with the products eventually ending up
in the air. It can be washed out of the air by rain, but will evaporate and continue to contaminate the air.
It can attach to rain or snow and be carried back down to the ground.
15. Quality:
2.1. Open the vent valve on upstream of the cooling water return
F.O
line block valve.
2.4. Close the vent valve when air is removed and only cooling
F.O
water comes out. Install blind on the vent valve.
2.5. Open the cooling water return block valve gradually. F.O
2.6. Open cooling water supply totally. Check for any leakage F.O
4.5. Open the block valve on line 510-P-0021 to the top of the
F.O
Transalkylator.
Note:
Monitor the temperatures of the Benzene stream and the Catalyst bed in the
Transalkylator, Differential temperature should not exceed 28°C.
5.2. Open the inlet and outlet valves of E-51002 and set the Recycle
Benzene flow to 5000 kg/hr on 510-FIC-051 to Transalkylation C.O
Feed Heater E-51002.
Note:
When the Transalkylator bed temperature increases to 70°C, increase the Recycle Benzene flow and temperature.
Note:
At this point, Recycle Benzene temperature flowing through Transalkylator is 98°C and the bed temperature is 70°C.
WARNING:
THE STEPS 1.6 AND 1.7 REQUIRE HEAT AND HEARING PROTECTION.
7.1. Open the steam valve 510-FV-050 gradually and start heating
up the Transalkylation Feed Heater. Open the steam in steps
of 3-5% if the temperature in the bottom doesn’t rise.
Repeat this step until the desired temperature and pressure C.O
has been reached. (Condensate is still not aligned to the
condensate header). Keep monitoring the pressures and
temperatures of the Transalkylator.
7.3. Line up the condensate to the header and close the drain: If
the desired temperature and pressure are reached and the
F.O
condensate sample is within the conductivity specification.
Mount the blind to the drain line which were removed.
8.2. Slowly increase the set point of 510-TIC-050 to 200°C until the
C.O
transalkylator bed temperatures reaches to 175°C.
Note:
Monitor 510-TIC-050 and bed temperatures 510-TI-051,510-TI-052,510-TI-053, 510-TI-054, 510-TI-
055 and adjust the set point if temperature differential is more than 28°C.
