NSDGA – ER VIRTUAL LEARNING PLAN (NSDGA-ER VLP) FOR SY 2020 - 2021

I. INTRODUCTION

The global lockdown of education institutions is going to cause major (and likely unequal) interruption in students’ learning;
disruptions in internal assessments; and the cancellation of public assessments for qualifications or their replacement by an
inferior alternative. This document discusses what can be done to mitigate these negative impacts.

The NSDGA – ER VLP refers to the institution’s distinct approach to quality De Guian education. It is our virtual campus where
we will build a vibrant community of learners and educators. All these foster effective online learning and holistic formation
built on solid and longstanding tradition of De Guian education.

II. DEFINITION OF TERMS

Learning within the NSDGA – ER VLP will require a new vocabulary. The following are key terms that will help navigate this
learning environment.

1. Online Learning. It refers to the education delivered through the internet. In the VLP, online learning experiences are
designed to enable in-depth student engagement with the lesson (Content), the teacher (Coach), and fellow students
(Community).
2. Online Learning Platform. This refers to the web-based set of tools that facilitate online learning. G Suite for Education®
is one of our official learning platform. We will use Google Classroom® as one of our Learning Management System.
Aside from these, we have also subscribed to the VSmart Learning Platform of Vibal Publishing House to manage our
learning platforms.
3. Synchronous Activities and Asynchronous Activities. These refer to the two modes of online learning.
a. Synchronous Activity happen in real-time, usually via video conferencing.
b. Asynchronous Activities are online learning activities that students can do on their own and at their own pace,
within a reasonable time frame. They require minimal real-time interaction between the teacher and the students
but provide students opportunities to communicate or consult with their teachers, as needed.

III. ONLINE SCHOOLING FEATURES

The NSDGA – ER VLP is characterized by the following

1. Structured.
Young learners in Basic Education need that balance and equilibrium that regular schedules and routines provide. This
is why the NSDGA – ER VLP provides a learning schedule that is comfortingly familiar to the common sense experience
of the learner.

The aim however is not to recreate what used to be the typical school day for the students.

In this setup, the focus is on the student’s learning time rather than the student’s contact time with the teacher. This
refers to the projected time that a student needs to be “on task” in order to acquire the learning outcomes for a
particular course or program. These tasks may include listening to a live or pre-recorded lecture, reading reference
material, participating in a discussion (whether synchronously or asynchronously), working on an individual task,
interacting with peers for a group project, or taking an assignment.

Some staple items in the basic education schedule are the following:

a. Daily Check-Ins. Each school day begins with a class prayer, reflection, monitoring of students’ well-being, daily
exercise, and reminders.
b. Reasonable Academic Learning time. The various academic courses are scheduled in consideration of the
developmental capacity of the students, their essential competencies, and life skills. Sessions are well spaced, with
sufficient break times, to make learning manageable for students.
c. Regular Consultation Periods. Consultations, whether by an individual or in small groups, are an essential element
of the schedule. These may be initiated by the teacher, student, or parent for academic or non-academic concerns.
d. Non-Academic Day. One out of five days in a school week is dedicated to non-academic activities. These may
include guidance of formation sessions, homeroom period, org or co-curricular activities.

Nuestra Señora De Guia Academy – East Rizal

2. Inclusive and Flexible.

The principles of inclusivity and flexibility define NSDGA – ER VLP’s Adaptive Design for Learning. Courses and lessons
are designed in such a way that delivery is possible through various modes (i.e. fully online, blended, face-to-face),
considering but not always requiring the latest learning technologies, while remaining faithful to the students’ needs
and context. Doing so will also facilitate an easy transition to face-to-face teaching through a well-designed program
worth keeping and implementing beyond this time of the pandemic.

No student will be left behind because learning materials will be available to all its students regardless of the strength
of their internet connectivity or the limitations of their available gadgets. These may come in the form of low-bandwidth
versions of online learning materials, or readily printable Learning Packages, which may be picked up from school when
necessary.

3. Holistic.

For Nuestra Señora De Guia, quality education has always referred to the holistic formation of the whole person – mind,
hands, and heart. This remains strong and true, even as we go online. As such, Basic Education’s curricular offerings
focus on both its academic programs as well as its non-academic formation programs for the students.

IV. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

1. CONTENT.

Following the De Guian principle of a holistic education, course content is streamlined to cover essential learning
competencies and relevant life skills that respond to the needs and context of the students. Students are taught to
critically reflect on their experiences and lead them beyond “merely knowing” toward action with purpose and impact.

2. DELIVERY.

The delivery of learning experiences will be in a modular manner, where each module corresponds to a particular
competency. An appropriate form of assessment will be given at the end of each module (or sets of modules) to test
for understanding and demonstration of competence before moving to the next modules. To balance students’ time
and effort, explore avenues for collaboration, and maximize learning opportunities, integration of content and
assessments across disciplines will be employed. Constant and consistent feedback from subject teachers will provide
necessary support to the attainment of learning goals.

3. GRADING.

Academic marks are simplified to focus on evidence of learning rather than to give a numerical measure of student
performance. As such, every grading period, students will be given a non-numerical or qualitative academic mark that
reflect their degree of mastery of the competencies of each course. More detailed and school-specific grading policies
will be communicated to students and their parents at the beginning of the school year during the orientation. Students
will also be given feedback in terms of effort and their conduct in the online courses.

V. NON-ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

1. GUIDANCE SERVICES.

These challenging times for our young learners call for keen attention to their well-being. In keeping with the De Guian
philosophy of a holistic education, the school ensures the presence of a counselor who is there to journey with the
students and provide psycho-emotional support for all students through consultation during academic days and routine
interviews on formation days.

Recognizing that safety precedes learning, non-academic consultations will be offered within the bounds of informed
consent and data privacy.

2. STUDENT ACTIVITIES.

De Guian education is holistic education. To form students as well-rounded individuals, the school continues to offer
opportunities for them to discover their gifts by joining student organizations, clubs, committees. These co-curricular
activity experiences may be both synchronous and asynchronous, and these will be shared through an online platform
during a designated activity period once a week.

These student activities are not intended to develop the students’ level of competence in other areas of interest but
also nurture their development as student-leaders.

3. HOMEROOM PROGRAM.

As we pursue online education, now more than ever, the school continues to highlight the important role of the Class
Teacher/Adviser/Moderator in the character formation of students. Class Moderators will continue to live out the
values of “care of the entire person” and compassion as they monitor student well-being by leading and preparing their
classes at the start of the day and monitoring the progress of their students. The Class Moderator will closely coordinate
with students and, as needed, also with their parents in giving reminders, following up requirements, and scheduling
consultation requests, among others.

4. CODE OF DISCIPLINE.

The vast opportunities offered by new technologies also call for a strong moral compass in our young learners. AS they
seize these opportunities, we must instill discipline, demand good character, and oversee their growth as responsible,
honest, and respectable persons. The feedback mechanisms regularly available to parents and guardians will help the
school and home achieve that. As a guide, a code of discipline that adapts to the new mode of delivery will be
implemented this year.

5. SOCIAL CONCERN AND INVOLVEMENT.

Despite the absence of off-campus outreach, immersion activities, and face-to-face interaction with our partner
institutions and communities, our commitment to forming persons-for-and with-others in this time of great need
remains strong. Online service learning sessions and activities related to social involvement, Christian service,
development of compassion, and being stewards of creation among others will be available to our students, and
integration of these thrusts to other areas will be assured.

6. HEALTH SERVICES

Our doctors and health services staff play another important role in developing resilience adaptability in students as
they prepare for the so-called “new normal.” As they continue to render consultation services electronically, their
regular health bulletins, digital information boards and skills training sessions for the members of the community will
help everyone acquire, early on, the necessary health and safety habits.

VII. PARENTS’ GUIDE TO SUPPORTING ONLINE LEARNING

In a learning environment characterized by independent learning and reduced direct instructional time with teachers, the
school and home partnership is more important than ever. The parents / guardians play a vital role in the success of online
learning by providing a home atmosphere that is safe, secure, and conducive to the cognitive growth of our young learners.

Parents may help in a significant way to establish the following routines:

 Continue waking hours just like in a regular school day

 Maintain school night bedtime hours for enough sleep
 Set up a dedicated workspace for online learning
 Follow a schedule that is based on their needs
 Complete academic work as best as possible
 Practice regular physical exercise and proper hygiene for health and wellness

They should also monitor and check their children’s daily activities and progress.

The school recognizes that families have different living conditions and varying resources available at home.

 The household does not have access to any computer device or Wi-Fi
 The student has technical difficulties or questions related to hardware and software platforms, or,
 The student is unable to engage in digital work due to sickness or power/internet disruption.

The school urges the parents to disclose if they are experiencing such issues.

The school wants to see greater initiative from the students in reaching out to teachers concerning lessons and assignments
considering that learning and character development are taking place away from the school. Just the same, the
parents/guardians are responsible for supporting them as they would under normal circumstances.

Hence, communications on academic matters should ideally begin between the students and his/her teacher. If further
conversation is needed, the parent/guardian could reach out to the school through the proper channels.

VIII. OTHER PRACTICAL CONCERNS

The default online learning mode in the NSDGA-ER VLP is highly, but not exclusively asynchronous for the following reasons:

 Internet Access. It works well even with low-bandwidth connections

 Practicality. It does not require students and teachers to be online all the time.
 Engagement. It provides more opportunities for independent and collaborative learning.

The software necessary for delivering and receiving online courses is basic.

INTERNAL USE ONLY R0_NSDGA-ER_ADM IMPLEMENTATION PLAN SY 2020-2021_21May2020

Nuestra Señora De Guia Academy – East Rizal

1. Audio and video plugins. Students need a media player for video and audio (e.g. Windows Media Player, VLC, etc.), as
well as third-party software for real-time web conferencing capability (such as Google Meet, etc.)
2. Productivity software. Students need to be familiar with some basics for:
a. Web browsing (e.g. Google Chrome)
b. Word Processing (e.g. Microsoft Word)
c. Reading text documents (e.g. Adobe Acrobat Reader)
d. Developing/reading presentations (e.g. Microsoft PowerPoint)
e. Video/sound recording (e.g. built-in camera)

Hardware needs include the following:

1. Broadband internet access. Users need sufficient bandwidth to sustain peak periods of teacher and student interaction
during a synchronous session.
2. Laptop or desktop computers. Access to a computer is a significant component of online learning. Though tablets and
smartphones may be used for viewing content and video conferencing, these devices are somehow limited in terms of
productivity software.

In situations where internet connectivity and available devices are insufficient, the school will prepare low bandwidth
versions of online learning materials and printable Learning Packages, which may be picked up from the campus when
necessary.
