normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a
contribution to her or his community.”

up a new hobby.
 The news around me: The bad news like the death toll.

daily life.

one's daily activities.
Symptoms: restlessness, trouble concentrating

 Eating Disorders

What is mental health stigma?

https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/mental-health-stigma
A stigma can be like a mark, a stain or a blemish. People with mental illness may face stigma
— they may be treated differently, as if they are somehow less than other people.
Stigma shows when someone with a mental illness is called 'dangerous', 'crazy' or
'incompetent' rather than unwell. Stigma can lead people with mental illness to be
discriminated against and miss out on work or housing, bullied or to become a victim of
violence. It can also mean they don’t seek treatment when they need it.

WEEK 3 11/05/2020
What can stigma do to people?7

Stigma can lead to a lack of support or empathy for people with a mental illness, leaving
people embarrassed, misunderstood, and marginalised. Stigma can cause more than hurt
feelings. It can result in symptoms being ignored, lead to poor recovery and a lower quality of
life due to isolation.

5 THINGS STIGMA CAN DO TO PEOPLE:

 It can lead to low self-confidence and them thinking they don’t deserve to be treated
like other people.
 Social Anxiety
 Can lead to people having insecurity leading to a long-term low self-esteem.
 Lack of support for others who are suffering.
 It can cause isolation from mental belief.

“NO TO STIGMA”:
 Show empathy
 Normalise things that people don’t treat as normal.
 Let them know there’s no shame in having disabilities.
 Learn more about mental illness and get a better understanding.

MICHEAL MORGANS STORY:

1. How was Michael stigmatized?
He had hurt his bicep while playing rugby .
2. How did he battle through his challenge?
He expressed his emotions, which helped him become healthier physically and mentally.
3. What support did he have to assist him?
His team helped him during the time of need.
4. How do you think this support helped him?
He was given a diary to help gain self confidence and his team supported him by encouraging
him to do better.
5. What advice would you have for someone in a situation of struggle?
Giving advice depends on the situation, For example, if the person is being stigmatised on
what they were, I would tell that person, that it doesn’t matter on what they wear. Whatever
they wear it makes them unique and that’s who they are.
