Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Plant and Animal Cells

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 5th

Content Standard Addressed: LS1.A: Structure and Function ● Plants and animals have internal and external
structures that serve various functions in growth, survival, behavior, and reproduction

Technology Standard Addressed: Empowered Learner Students leverage technology to take an active role in
choosing, achieving, and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning
sciences. Students:

Selected Technology Tool: Bubbl.us

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The activity I have planned for the students is a mind map of the Plant and Animal Cell. They will deconstruct
each cell by providing the structures of the cell and their functions. The tool I selected, Bubbl.us, is a great
lesson idea that will support all students. Mind mapping is another way to provide organized notes that
everyone can understand. I believe this technology tool supports the learning experience by providing
Multiple Means of Engagement and Multiple Means of Representation. This allows students to express what
they know in a more engaging way other than taking regular notes.
Lesson idea implementation:
In the beginning of the lesson, the teacher will go over the plant and animal cell. The teacher will provide
lessons and videos on each cell. At the end of the lesson, the students will then create their own mind map
showing the different structures between the Plant and Animal Cell. The project will be introduced by the
teacher showing her example of the Mind Map she made for the Plant and Animal Cell. Before any of this can
happen, the teacher must provide step-by-step instructions on how to use this technology tool. After she
instructs the students on how to use it, the students will then be able to work on their own.
Student learning will be assessed on how well they know the cell parts and functions. To differentiate
learning, the teacher can provide sentence stems for the students to get them started with their sentences.
To extend the student learning to a higher level, I will provide a blank copy of a plant and animal cell. There
will be definitions under each structure, but the names will not be on them. The students will then match the
appropriate name to the definition, this will increase the students to the application level. The way I will
provide my students with feedback for their assignments is by making sure that all the information is correct

on their Mind Map, and I will also make sure that there are little grammatical errors. To conclude the lesson, I
will ask the students of they have any further questions on the plant and animal cells structures and
functions.

Reflective Practice:
I feel the activity I created will impact student learning because it is a great differentiation tool and it is easy
to follow. Students can use this Mind Map if they ever have trouble answering questions about the Plant and
Animal Cell. To further extent the lesson, I could have my students do a big project on the Plant and Animal
Cell by having the students create their own cell.
