Lesson Idea Name: All About Plants

Grade Level/Content Area: 1st Grade Science
Content Standard Addressed: S1L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the
basic needs of plants and animals.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be

the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current
technologies and are able to transfer their
knowledge to explore emerging technologies.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I would like for the students to know the basic parts of the plant to help prepare them for the lesson. I
would like for the students to be able to come into the class the next day with ideas and questions for
me.
Selected Instructional Software Tool:
Anchor
Description of Software:
Anchor is the tool that I used to create my podcast, and it is probably one of the easiest tools that I have used
in this class. Anchor allows you to create podcasts and edit them seamlessly. There are so many tools to help
you on the website, like adding music and even editing the sound on the podcast to make it just want you
want. This website would be very useful in my classroom for when I make podcasts, they are easily recorded
and distributed, you can even make them on your phone on the mobile app. Anchor being free also creates a
stress-free way to make podcasts.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.

newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it
via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
I am excited to share my podcast below because I think the way that I have used it would be a great way for
me to include it in my classroom. I provided mine as a “weekend message” that the students could use at
home. This could be considered like a “teaser” and get the students really excited for learning in the
upcoming week. It is also a great way for parents to keep up and know what their child is learning each week
if they would like to stay updated. I did my podcast as a preview of what we would be learning about plants in
the upcoming week and gave them an overview of the topic and what we would be doing. This podcast would
cover standard S1L1.a.(a. Develop models to identify the parts of a plant—root, stem, leaf, and flower.) and
S1L1.b.(b. Ask questions to compare and contrast the basic needs of plants (air, water, light, and nutrients)
and animals (air, water, food, and shelter).). This is a great example of the UDL requirements because
podcasts are different forms of engagement, and they keep the students involved and interested in what they
are learning.
Managing student learning:
This will make the students become active learners because they will listen to the podcast then have to
come up with questions and ideas. This will excite the students because they will be able to have a
teaser to the lesson and get excited for the learning of the week ahead.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle
you are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of
Representation, or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
This tool allows for the students to have a different means of representation by having them be able to
use the podcast as a means of instruction. They will also have multiple means of action and
expression by being able to conduct their own research and come up with ideas and questions of their
own to bring into the classroom.
Reflection: I feel like this will make the students excited to learn, they will get to hear a message
from their teacher ahead of time and get to know what the course of action for that week is. I also feel
that it will provide a sense of comfort, in that they will know what to expect when they walk into class
and can have background knowledge to help them through the lesson.
