Content: Properties of Useful and Harmful Materials
Content Standard: Properties of materials to determine whether they are useful or harmful.
Performance Standard: Uses local, recyclables solid and or liquid materials in making useful product.
Learning Competency: Use the properties of materials whether they are useful or harmful.
Code: S5MT – Ia-b - 1

I. Objective: Identify the different properties of solid materials.

II. Subject Matter: Properties of Solid

A. Science Concept/Ideas
Solid has definite shape, size and volume
Elastic materials are materials that return to its original shape and size after being
stretched and twisted.
Elasticity is the property of matter wherein it returns to its original shape and size after
being stretched and twisted.
Porous materials are materials that contain holes that hold water and air.
Porosity refers to the quality of material to contain pores or small holes within it allow
water and gases to pass through. The greater the pores the greater it can hold water and
air.
Physical properties can be measured without changing the appearance.
Intensive property of matter do not depend on the amount of the substance present.
B. Materials:
Sponge, tissue paper, cotton/buboy, paper, small basin, graduated cylinder, stop watch,
water, honey, cup, straw, rubber band, garter, meter stick, activity card
C. Reference:
Elementary Science Explorer 121-125
D. Process Skills:
Observing, experimenting, analysing, comparing, communicating, inferring
E. Values:
Cooperation, Work harmoniously with others
III. Learning Tasks:
A. Engagement:
1. Singing a song. (Let’s Study Science)
2. Drill
Game ng Bayan: The class will be grouped into two (boys and girls).
They will sip the honey in the glass using the straw given by the teacher.
The first group to finish will be the winner.
3. Motivation
Were you able to sip all the honey nectar in your glass?
Was it easy?
B. Exploration:
a. What to do.
1. Present the different materials that the class will use for their activity.
Ask them things that they know about the objects. Have them also infer the things
that they will do these materials.
Write the answers of the class on the board.
2. Tell the pupils that they are going to perform an activity to test their hypothesis.
3. Set standard to be followed in doing the activity.

b. Activity Proper

1
1. Pupils will be grouped into five groups. Each group will proceed to their
first base. After a minute, each group will move clockwise to proceed to their next
base. They will repeat this until their through with all the activities.
2. Please see LM Activity #3, Lasticmat and Hole-Some Idea.
3. They will be given another minute for their group discussion.
4. Teacher’s supervision.

C. Explanation:
1. Presentation of output
a. Reporting the results of the activity.
Each group will
2. Finding out
a. Discuss and analyse the result of the activity.
b. Questions
What property of matter shows the quality of materials to hold water and air?
What property of matter shows the ability of materials to return to its original
shape and size after being stretched, compressed and twisted?
Based on your activity, what is the most porous material? Why?
D. Elaboration:
1. Deepening Process:
Situational analysis:
What would you use to remove the milk spilled on the floor? Why?
You want to make a sling shot for your brother. What material should you ask mother
to buy for this gift? Why?
2. Generalization
What property of matter show the ability to return to its original shape and size after
being stretched, compressed and twisted?
What property of matter shows the ability of holding water and air?
3. Application:
Pupils will be grouped into two (boys vs. girls)
One group will arrange the picture from the more elastic object to the least elastic
and the other group will arrange the object from the most porous object to the least
porous object.
Let the pupils explain their answer.

Group B

4. Valuing
Robert hit his classmate using rubber band. His teacher summoned him and got
scolded. Would you do what Robert did? Why?
E. Evaluation:
Directions: Identify the property of solid material does each object possessed. Write P for
porosity and E for Elasticity.
1. Sponge
2. Rubber
3. Cloth
4. Tissue paper
5. Pad paper
6. Cotton
7. Garter
8. Suspender
9. Spring
10. Sling shots

IV. Assignment:
In which activity at home can you use the ability of elastic and porous material? Give the
situation and explain how?
