Title of the Activity: The Art of Detaching

Most Essential Learning Competency: Performs division of polynomial using long division
and synthetic division
 K to 12 BEC CG: M10AL-Ig-1

Directions: I. Answer the following problems applying the algebraic long division.

1. Is 3m – 2 a factor of 6m3 – m2 – 5m + 2?

2. One factor of n3 – 2n2 – n + 2 is n – 2. Find the other factors.

3. Find the remainder when dividing y2 + 3y +5 by y – 2. If f(y) = y2 + 3y + 5,

find f(2). Compare the answers.

4. What mistakes, if any, have we committed in working through the following long
division problem?
2x2 + 3x + 3
2x – 3 ) 4x + 0x2 – 3x + 5
3

4x3 – 6x2
- 6x2 – 3x
6x2 – 9x
6x + 5
6x – 9
-4=R

5. Suppose that the quotient upon dividing one polynomial by another polynomial is
3k2 – k + 32k – 121
k+4

What is the dividend?

II. Apply the process of synthetic division to answer the following problems. Illustrate if
necessary.

1. What mistakes or formatting inconsistency, if any, have we committed in working

through the following synthetic division problem?

4 | 2 -7 -8 16
8 4 16
2 1 -4 0

2. Divide (3x3 – 5x – 2) by (x – 2). If f(x) = 3x3 – 5x – 2, find f(2). Compare the remainder
from the division to the value of f(2).

3. Divide (2y4 – 3y2 +1) by (y + 1). If f(y) = 2y4 – 3y2 +1, find f(-1). Compare the remainder
from the division to the value of f(-1).
4. Based on your answers to nos. 2 and 3, how do you think f(r), and the division f(r) by
x – r are related?

5. The store Branches of Lazada assembles boxes to package items for mailing. The store
manager found that the volume of the box made from a piece of cardboard with a square
of length x inches cut from each corner is 4x3 – 168x2 + 1728x in3. If the piece of the
cardboard is 48 inches long, how wide is it?

Title of the Activity: The Art of Detaching

Most Essential Learning Competency: Performs division of polynomial using long

division and synthetic division
 K to 12 BEC CG: M10AL-Ig-1

Directions: I. Solve each problem carefully applying the algebraic long division.
Illustrate if necessary.

1. Is a5 – 25 exactly divisible by a – 2?

2. Find the value of k so that the remainder upon dividing (h2 + 8h + k) by (h- 4) is zero.
3. The area of a rectangle LOVE is represented by 6r2 + 18r +56. Its width is represented by
2r + 8. Point I is the midpoint of LO. LIFT is a square. Find the length of rectangle
LOVE and the area of the square LIFT.

4. Yu Kamin is a genetic engineer working in a vaccine for influenza. The number of people
in a small town during an epidemic is estimated to be n = 170t2 , where n represents the
t2 + 1
number of people and t represents the number of weeks from the beginning of the
epidemic. Simplify the formula for the number of people who catch influenza during the
epidemic. What happens to the value of n as t becomes very great?

5. A magician asked a member of his audience to choose any number. He said “Multiply
your number by 3. Add the sum of your number and 8 to that result. Now, divide by the
sum of your number and two.” The magician announced the final answer without asking
the original number. What was the final answer and how did he know what it was?

II. Solve each problem applying the process of synthetic division. Illustrate if necessary.

1. Find the value of n such that (y3 – ny2 + 5) divided by y – 1 will leave a remainder of 5.

2. Show that (m + 2) is not a factor of (m4 – 2m + 1) but a factor of

(9m4 +2m3 + 2m2 + 3m - 2).

3. Prove that (a -b) is a factor of an – bn for all values of n > 0, n{n|set of integers}.
4. Make a flowchart for problem no. 3.

5. The Cookie Crate Co. makes cookie tins in several sizes. The largest tin they can make is
three inches longer than twice its width. It has a volume of 4w3 + 8w2 + 3w in3, where w
represents the width of the tin. If the lid is made separately, how much metal is required
to make this cookie tin?
