Widening/Improvement to 4 (Four) Lane with Paved

Shoulder from Ch. 52.470km to Ch.71.500 km (Design
Ch.48.655 km to Ch.67.556km) of Tulungia- Jogighopa
Bridge Approach Section (Package-5) of Bilasipura-
Guwahati road (NH-17) in the state of Assam
underBharatmala Pariyojana on EPC mode
SITE REPORT

1 INTRODUCTION
The Package-5 of the project road starts from Tulungia (Junction with NH-117) and ends
before Jogighopa Bridge (Ex Ch 52.470km to Ex Ch 71.500 km). Design Length of the project
come out as 18.901 km (Design Ch 48.655km to Ch.67.566km). The entire project falls under
Bongaigaon district of Assam.
The alignment of the proposed road generally follows the existing road from CH 48.666
KM to 60.000 KM except from KM49.850 to 50.200 where a ROB has been proposed. From
KM 60.000 the road follows a greenfield alignment till the end of the project. The Haripani
river flows along the alignment from KM48.666 to KM 60.00 and the meanders of the river
flows very close to the proposed road at 4 locations. However , eroding banks are not observed.
The greenfield alignment after KM 60.000 onwards is mostly inundated at present the
alignment passes through paddy fields in these locations. The land use/land classification of
the alignment is al follows :
1 : KM 48.666 to KM 60 : Existing Road
2. KM 60 to 62 : Paddy field
3. KM 62 to 63 : Low lying area
4. KM 63 to 65.500 : Paddy field and scantily builtup area
5. KM 65.500 to End : Water logged area.

2.2 Obstructions Along Project Road
2.2.1 Diversion (Realignment)
The project road diverges from the NH-17 at design chainage 59.930 and moves through vast
water logged area and comes nearer to the existing Highway at the end. The diversion
through water logged fields makes it impossible to carry an investigation along the proposed
centreline and we were only able to access limited portion of the alignment.
2.2.2 Water Streams along Project Road
The following pictures show the water streams/ river running parallel to design alignment.

A. Chainage 53+300
The water stream remains 3-4 m from the right carriageway edge.
B. At chainage 57+600

C. At chainage 58+550
D. At chainage 58+900

E. At chainage 59+350

2.2.3 Balancing Culverts

The balancing culverts along the stretch can be provided at FRL provided in P&P because the
existing road is constructed at high embankment.

The balancing culvert at 49.400 is situated at built up area where the issue regarding the
section of covered drain may arise as the transfer of water needs to from drain to drain.
2.2.4 Existing Road Formation
The existing road from CH 48.600 km to 59.950 km is two lane with earthen shoulders on
both sides. The whole section has earthen shoulders of 1 m on either side of the road. The
following photographs shows the existing road formation from design chainage 52.300 to
57.800 at equal intervals.
2.2.5 Water Logged Area
The water logged areas around the alignment from design chainage 62+650 to chainage
63+950 are shown below:
The alignment at chainage KM 64+400 to KM 66+100 cannot be accessed at this moment.

2.2.6 ROB 1 and ROB 2

A. ROB 1 (49+900 KM)
B. ROB 2 (Salbari-Jogigopha Road)
2.2.7 Location of VUP (project end)

2.2.8 Geotechnical Investigation
Three bore tests has been conducted on or nearby proposed alignment at following locations:

 56+650 (15m bore)

 Nearby rob 2 (25m bore)
 Nearby VUP (15m bore)

Proctor test and CBR test results done on soil samples collected nearby design chainage KM
61+000 are attached as Annexure II.
