Assignment-Online Classes-2-A (Formulating the

research design)
Note: Write answer to each of the following questions in not more than 200words.
1 What are the basic research design issues? Describe them in some detail.
The Research design is to select various choices among available methods includes the
Qualitative or Quantitative, Exploratory or Explanatory, Inductive or Deductive.
The issue can be if the research question answer through Qualitative and research is
exploratory research may not apply the tools of Quantitative for data collection and
Data analysis. The must follow questionnaires to collect data not the interviews and
focus group based on Paradigm. The design is very important if researcher not follow the
research design the results of research may not relevant.

2 Why is it important to consider basic design issues before conducting the study and
even as early as at the time of formulating the research question?
The Design issues is the selection of Research Paradigm means Stance of researcher
and based on Paradigm researcher select various choices from available methods. The
research question is with why and how cannot be answered through Quantitative
research design and need to conduct the interviews and observation rather than just
survey.

3 Is a field study totally out of the question if one is trying to establish cause-and-effect
relationships?
Studies conducted to establish cause-and-effect relationships using the same natural
environment in which the subjects under study normally function are called field
experiments. The researcher does interfere with the natural occurrence of events inasmuch as
the independent variable is manipulated.
No, Not necessary the research field study conducted to evaluate the relationship
And impact of variables and may focus on various other contexts also.

4 “An exploratory study is just as useful as a predictive study.” Discuss this statement.

knowledge. Without exploratory studies, n areas of knowledge cannot be developed. Every

theory we now have must at one time have started as an exploratory research study. Exploratory
research lays the groundwork for understanding new phenomena, and developing new.
measures to test these. The exploratory studies of today blossom into the predictive studies of
tomorrow, and in that sense both types of study are useful and essential to generate knowledge,
understanding, and prediction of business phenomena

5 Discuss the interrelationships among noncontrived setting, the purpose of the study,
type of investigation, researcher interference, and time horizon of study.
The extent of interference by the researcher with the normal flow of work at the workplace
has a direct bearing on whether the study undertaken is causal or co-relational. A co-
relational study is conducted in the nature environment of the organization with
minimum interference by the researcher with the normal flow of work. For example, if
a researcher wants to study the factors influencing training effectiveness ( a co-
relational study), all that the individual has to do is develop a theoretical framework
collect the relevant data and analyze them to come up with the findings

● Below are three scenarios. Indicate how the researcher should proceed in each case;
that is, determine the following, giving reasons:
a. The purpose of the study
b. The type of investigation
c. The extent of researcher interference
d. The study setting
e. The time horizon for the study
f. The unit of analysis

6 Scenario A
● Ms. Joyce Lynn, the owner of a small business (a women’s dress boutique), has invited
a consultant to tell her how her business is different from similar small businesses
within a 60-mile radius with respect to use of the most modern computer technology,
sales volume, profit margin, and staff training.
Purpose of Study: Exploratory Research
Type of Investigation: Inductive
Extent of researcher interference: Positivism
Study Setting: Qualitative Research
Time Horizon: Cross Sectional
Unit of Analysis: Focus groups or Interviews

7 Scenario B
● Mr. Paul Hodge, the owner of several restaurants on the East Coast, is concerned about
the wide differences in their profit margins. He would like to try some incentive plans
for increasing the efficiency levels of those restaurants that lag behind. But before he

actually does this, he would like to be assured that the idea would work. He asks a
researcher to help him on this issue.
Purpose of Study: Explanatory Research
Type of Investigation: Deductive
Extent of researcher interference: Post-Positivism
Study Setting: Quantitative Research
Time Horizon: Cross Sectional
Unit of Analysis: Questionnaires

8 Scenario C
● A manager is intrigued why some people seem to derive joy from work and get
energized by it, while others find it troublesome and frustrating.
Purpose of Study: Exploratory Research
Type of Investigation: Inductive
Extent of researcher interference: Interpretivism
Study Setting: Qualitative Research
Time Horizon: Cross Sectional
Unit of Analysis: Interviews
