Activity #3: Positivism

1.) What is the general idea of Positivism?

It is the concept that social phenomena has an explanation and it can be
proven through a series of methods in scientific research. It focuses on obtaining the
needed information by conducting experiments, surveys, and statistics as it utilizes
deductive logic, from a generalized idea to a more meticulous breakdown of the
patterns that happen in society. Quantitative data and objective perspective is a
more accepted approach in positivism.

2.) What is Structural-Functionalism?

This framework was brought forth by many sociologists such as Emile
Durkheim because it states that a society, whether big or small, has a certain unique
structure that they follow and it makes society function properly. Through this, all
people have unity and established specialization or roles in society. They agree on
values, order, and certain rules. The system works hand in hand to have stability
because every action of a citizen is integrated.

3.) How do you differentiate social function from social dysfunction?

Social function is the general overview of a society’s system and operation
that make society better in terms of different denominations such as religion,
education, or the media. These social structures help shape the mindset of people's
beliefs, which will be agreed upon. Although the goal is to unite people, there are
other unforeseen effects which may show through the manifest and latent function.
People have intentions of doing something, however there are also unintended
circumstances that follow. It may lead to a social dysfunction, which disrupts a
function of society and has a negative effect.

4.) Who conceptualized the idea of “Social Equilibrium” and what is Social Equilibrium?
Herbert Spencer coined the term for Social Equilibrium and the main
concept is to maintain a balance of every action in the roles of society and to be able
to identify how a certain community will respond to an unfortunate event and
restore it back to its normal state.
