CE235: ENGINEERING UTILITIES 2

Water has become more and more a commodity than just a basic necessity. Even
in the highly urbanized area of Metro Manila, water supply is inadequate with only 60%
of the population being served by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System
(MWSS) with a daily output of 4,000 million liters water share by the population and
industry. In the country, purification started with water treatment plants and public utilities
like the National Waterworks and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA). This later became the
MWSS for Metropolitan Manila and the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) for
the provinces. The MWSS was later privatized into the Maynilad Water and Manila Water.
However it was probably only in the last 20 years when intensive campaigns were started
to clean wastewater and provide safer drinking water. However, as time passes by, Water
Refilling Station became an alternative source of drinking water supply in the Philippines
and it can already be a good source of safe drinking water also known as the purified
water. Purified water can meet the aesthetic standards easily detectable by the people in
terms of taste, odor and color. The efficient water purification processes can make the
quality of water superior to the traditional water systems in terms of removed impurities.
The set of plans shows the water distribution layout, storm drainage and sewer
layout for a 2 storey hostel and Café bar at San Juan, Siquijor. The source of water for
the said establishment is from local water distribution system and from underground
aquifer. The regular source of water will be from the local water distribution system. Water
coming from underground aquifer will be for emergency purposes of when the local water
distributor is not distributing water due to maintenance. Tapping from the local water
distributor requires only a gate valve, a water meter and a check valve. As for the
underground source, it requires a centrifugal pump and a check valve.
Water coming from these sources shall be stored in a centralized storage tank of
large capacity since both hostel and café will be tapping from this reservoir. Close to this
centralized storage tank is 2 pressured tank, one for each building, used to distribute the
water for each building. As for the water going to the hostel, a separate pipe will be tapped
to a water heater before it will be distributed to the comfort rooms of the hotel.
There is no featured treatment for the water to be used by these facilities since the
water on the said location is declared clean by the local water authorities. Although it is
intended for utility purposes only and discourage to be utilized as drinking water. If water
is to be drunk, it is recommended that it should be first boiled to remove any impurities.
Thus water is safe to be used in cooking.
