1. If the waveform of a voltage has a form factor of 1.15 and peak factor of 1.5, and if
the peak value is 4.5 kV, calculate the average and the r.m.s values of the voltage?
Answer: Vrms = 3kV, Vavg = 2.61kV

2. Determine Vpp in each case when


a) Vp = 1V b) Vrms = 1.414V c) Vavg = 3V

3. Determine Vrms in each case when

6. A 20 Ω resistor is connected in series with a coil of inductance 0.06 H. The combined


circuit is connected to a 240V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate a) the reactance of the coil, b)
the impedance of the circuit, c) the current of the circuit.
Answer: a) XL = 18.85Ω, b) Z = 27.48Ω, c) I = 8.73A

7. A coil of 0.6 H inductance and a 300 Ω resistor are connected in series to a 50 Hz


supply. Calculate the circuit impedance. An inductor in a radio receiver has to have a
reactance of 11kΩ at a frequency of 1.5 MHz. Calculate the inductance (in mH).
Answer: L = 1.167mH
8. A resistor and a capacitor are connected in series across a 150 V a.c supply. When the
frequency is 40 Hz the current is 5 A, and when the frequency is 50 Hz the current is
6 A. Find the resistance and capacitance of the resistor respectively.
Answer: R = 11.68Ω, C = 144µF

10. A 8 Ω resistor is connected in series with a coil of inductance 0.06 H. The combined
circuit is connected to a 50V, 60 Hz supply. The phase angle, θ between the current
and the applied voltage is 70.5o. Calculate
a) the current Answer: I = 2.08A
b) the apparent power Answer: S = 104.2VA
c) the active power Answer: P = 34.7W

11. In a three-phase four-wire system, the line voltage is 415 V and non-inductive loads
of 10 kW, 8 kW, and 5 kW are connected between the three line conductors and the
neutral as in fig.32.16. Calculate the current in each line. Answer: IR = 41.47A, IY =
33.33A, IB = 20.8A

12. A three-phase motor operating off a 400 V system is developing 40 kW at efficiency


of 0.89 p.u. and a power factor of 0.85. Calculate
a) the line current Answer: IL = 76.41A
b) the phase current if the winding are delta-connected. Answer: IP
= 44.17A
