conoce como la Síntesis Moderna, o
Neodarwinismo. Tras el éxito de un
nueva disciplina suele llegar la diversi-
ficación y a menudo nuevas controver-
sias, pero esta vez dentro del grupo de
“verdaderos creyentes” y no con aque-
llos que rechazan los supuestos básicos
de la misma. Y así está sucediendo con
la psicología evolucionista, cuyas sub-
disciplinas emergentes se han ido ocu-
pando, por ejemplo, de la psicología
social, la salud y la enfermedad (i.e., la
medicina darwinista), y el desarrollo.
Dicho de un manera sencilla, la psi-

es la aplicación de la teoría evolucio-
nista a cuestiones relacionadas con el
desarrollo psicológico humano. Sin
embargo, la PED no es simplemente
la suma (o la media) de la psicología
evolucionista y la psicología del desa-
rrollo. Desde nuestra posición de psi-
cólogos evolutivos, estimamos que la
corriente principal de la psicología
evolucionista carece de una teoría del
desarrollo. De hecho, aunque los psi-
cólogos evolucionistas lo nieguen (ver
Buss, 1995; Tooby y Cosmides, 1992),
para los psicólogos evolutivos, en el
sentido de psicólogos del desarrollo y
para muchos otros, la psicología evolu-
cionista aún destila un punto de deter-
minismo genético, tan criticado anta-
ño por los relativistas culturales y otros
oponentes de las teorías del comporta-
miento humano de base biológica.

para la psicología evolucionista. La

psicología evolucionista en el proceso.
A la vez, creemos también que, por
supuesto, una perspectiva auténtica-
mente evolucionista acabará transfor-
mando la psicología del desarrollo. De
este modo, la PED no supone tan sólo
la inclusión de la investigación infantil

those who reject the basic tenets of the
discipline. So it is with evolutionary
psychology, with subdisciplines emer-
ging focusing, for example, on social
psychology, health and illness (i.e.,
Darwinian medicine), and develop-
ment.
Stated most simply, evolutio nary
developmental psychology (EDP) is the
application of evolutionary theory to
issues of human psychological deve-
lopment. Yet, EDP is not merely the
sum (or average) of evolutionary and
developmental psychology. From our
vantage point as developmental psy-
chologists, it became clear to us that
mainstream evolutionary psychology
lacked a theory of development. In
fact, although evolutionary psycholo-
gists claim otherwise (see Buss, 1995;
Tooby & Cosmides, 1992), to develop-
mentalists (and to many others), evo-
lutionary psychology still hints of
genetic determinism, so reviled by
cultural relativists and other oppo-
nents of biologically-based theories of
human behavior. This lack of a cohe-
rent theory of development (“How do
evolved mechanisms get translated
into behavior?”) is problematic for
evolutionary psychology. EDP provi-
des such a theory, transforming signi-
ficantly, we believe, evolutionary psy-
chology in the process. We also belie-
ve, of course, that a truly evolutionary
perspective will transform develop-
mental psychology. Thus, EDP invol-
ves more than the inclusion of research
on children to mainstream evolutio-
nary psychology, but a new way of
thinking both about ontogeny and
phylogeny, and about the relationship
between these two types of develop-
ment.
This speci al issue of Infancia y
Aprendizaje is intended to introduce
spanish speaking psychologists to
some of the basic ideas, issues, and
areas of inquiry in evolutionary deve-
lopmental psychology. The first arti-

dizaje, tratamos de presentar a los psi-
cólogos de habla hispana algunas de
las ideas básicas, cuestiones y áreas de
investigación de la psicología evolu-
cionista del desarrollo. En el primer
artículo, “Psicología Evolucionista del
Desarrollo: contemplando la ontogé-
nesis humana desde los ojos del evolu-
cionismo” (“Evolutionary developmental
psych ology: Viewing human ontogeny

knowledge: Implications for children’s lear-
ning” (“Evolución y desarrollo del
conocimiento intuitivo: implicaciones
para el aprendizaje infantil”; artículo

tellano), se ofrece una visión de cómo
un psicólogo cognitivo que parte de
una perspectiva evolucionista del desa-
rrollo contempla el desarrollo intelec-
tual infantil, y se discuten algunas de
las implicaciones de dicha visión para
la educación. En el tercer artículo,
“Evolutionary developmental psychology
and socio-emotional development” (“Psico-
logía evolucionista del desarrollo y
desarrollo socio-emocional”; artículo
en inglés, con versión completa en cas-
tellano), escrito por Peter K. Smith, se

lutionary psychology? What are the
basic principles of EDP, and how
might an evolutionary developmental
psychological perspective be applied
to further our understanding of
human behavior and its development?
The second paper by David C. Geary,
“Evolution and development of folk
knowledge: Implications for children’s
learning” (“Evolución y desarrollo del
conocimiento intuitivo: implicaciones para
el aprendizaje infantil”; article in
English, also full text in Spanish) pro-
vides a look at how a cognitive psy-
chologist with an evolutionary deve-
lopmental perspective views children’s
intellectual development and some of
the implications of this view for edu-
cation. The third article, “Evolutio-
nary developmental psychology and
socio-emotional development” (“Psico-
logía evolucionista del desarrollo y desarro-
llo socio-emocional”; article in English,
also full text in Spanish) by Peter K.
Smith, examines how an evolutionary
perspective is relevant to understan-
ding many aspects of socio-emotional
development in infancy, childhood
and adolescence, and examines rese-
arch on a variety of topics, ranging
from parental investment and parent-
offspring conflict to children’s peer
groups, dominance, aggression, and
play. The final article in this issue is by
Josep Call and Malinda Carpenter and
is titled “On imitation in apes and
children” (“Sobre la imitación en los
monos antropoides y los niños”; article in

evolution of a particularly important
area of social cognition and highlights
the importance of comparative analy-
ses for an evolutionary developmental
explication. Many evolutionary deve-
lopmental psychologists are as interes-
ted (or perhaps more interested) in the
role of development in evolution as
the reverse, and we can gain insights
into such questions only through
comparative analyses.

surface of a field that we hope will
