Carpenter (2010) defines management as “The art of getting things done through the efforts of
other people” (p.11). From Griffin, Elbert (2002), management is defined as “the process of
planning, organizing, directing, and controlling an organization financial, physical, human, and
information resources to achieve its goals” (p.132). Griffin, Elbert (2002) further says that
“Manager’s oversee the use of all these resources in their respective firms.” That concurs with
Carpenter’s definition that the Manager’s role is to get things done. With Ferell, Hirt, & Ferell,
(2011), management has been defined as a process put in place to achieve organization
objectives by using its resources effectively and efficiently in a changing environment (p.130).
That concurs as well with the previous definition of management in a company. For me, the time
I was working with a local Malawian company called Cromington Textiles Company around 10
years ago. The manager’s role was to make sure that the goals of the company were achieved.
The manager was a link between the owner of the company and the staff responsible for the
implementation of the goals of the company. So overall, a Manager is a key position in a
company for the good performance and achievement of its goals and objectives. Carpenter, M.,

Very well thought out and presented with your sources. Also, nicely done to bring in a brief part
of your work history to connect your thoughts to the question.

Francis,

First off, AMAZING response. Definitely Nice and Concise, with A LOT of information packed into
a small box gift wrapped with appropriate citations. Well Done Indeed!!!

Notice how the formatting is off, especially the spacing. This is common when trying to type
directly into an online editor. What I do is open MS Word, type my response and make sure it is
formatted correctly, then copy/paste (Arial font 11 is usually best for online editors) into the
editor. That may help with formatting your references. :-)

Hello Francis,

Yes, I agree a manager is a key to the performance and achievement of the goals. They are the
ones who have to encourage there staff to increase personal performance levels to aide in
getting the overall goal completed. You did an amazing job on citation and answering the
question by the way.
