Haida Gwaii (Haida First Nations)


Name used today: Queen Charlotte Islands
- name was given by European explorers in the 18th century

● Archipelago (about 150 islands) that is 250km long and off the north
coast of BC
● Graham and Moresby Islands are the largest
● Lots of wildlife including a subspecies of black bear and stickleback fish
that are different due to adaptive radiation
● There is unique plant life due to Haida Gwaii not being glaciated during
the Ice Age. Sitka spruce and cedar forests are common.
● Rugged mountains (formed by movement of plates under Pacific
Ocean)
● The Hecate Strait separates it from the mainland (water is very rough
there)
● Population of about 4,500
2. Ashcroft (Ashcroft First Nations)
Name used today: Cornwall
Description of the region
● About 90km west of Kamloops
● in the Thompson Canyon area
● at the confluence of the ​Bonaparte​ and Thompson Rivers
● Open grasslands and forests of Engelmann spruce
● Wildlife includes deer, cougar, and blue grouse
● Population on First Nations land: 72
● Population off of First Nations land: 203

3. Nuxalk Nation
Name used today: Bella Coola
Description of the region

● Found at north arm of Burke Channel
