Instrument panel cracks

K, L and N buses

Background Feedback

In production, two measures have been adopted
to prevent cracks from occurring.
• Spraying anti-corrosion agent on the instru-
ment panels was discontinued with effect
from chassis number 1 826 460.
Under certain conditions, the solvent in the
anti-corrosion agent can give rise to the for-
mation of cracks.
• Drying of the plastic material before the in-
strument panels were moulded was intro-
duced with effect from chassis number
1 827 581.
On this occasion, marking of the panel was
also introduced. At one switch the marking
consists of a recess in the edge of the switch
hole, see Fig.
Moisture in the plastic material before it is
moulded may result in steam bubbles form-
ing in the material which can cause cracks to
occur.
Note: To avoid the formation of cracks, the in-
strument panels must be cleaned with alcohol or
a soap-based solvent. The plastic can withstand
these solvents. Other solvents can give rise to
cracks.

Work description
1. Remove the switch or switches. 6. Fit the support plate in place and hold it
there until it is secure.
2. Cut the support plate to size if it is to be fit-
ted on a place for only one or two switches. 7. Remove surplus adhesive and refit the
switch or switches.
3. Remove the plastic material from the bot-
tom edge of the hole for the switches so that
the switch's spring-loaded clips are free Materials
when the support plate is fitted in position.
Description Part No.
4. Make sure that the edge of the hole is clean. Support plate 478 691
Clean it with an alcohol-based solvent. The
plastic can withstand alcohols.
5. Completely cover the edge of the hole in
the recess, including the corners, with adhe-
sive. Use an adhesive that is free from sol-
vents, such as two-component epoxy
adhesive or hot-melt adhesive. The solvent
in the adhesive can cause cracks to develop
in the instrument panel.
