There are three limit states for a tension member:
a) yielding of the gross cross‐section of the member away from
the connection

b) fracture of the effective net area through the holes
c) block shear fracture through the bolts at the connection

Failure might occur by shear along a plane through the
fastaners plus tension along a perpendicular plane on the
