I. Content and Standards:


 CC.2.1.2.B.2 Use place-value concepts to read, write, and skip count to 1,000
II. Prerequisites:
 Students are able to count by ones
III. Essential Question:
 What can I count by in order to count to higher numbers up to 1,000.
IV. Instructional Objective(s):
 Students will skip-count within 100, counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
 Students will skip-count within 1000, counting by 100s.
V. Instructional Procedures (BDA):
a. Before (anticipatory set)
 Tell the students that Mr. Beeman is trying to find out how many students are in 2nd
grade. And he’d like to know how many students are in our classroom today. What is
one way we could figure out how many students we have in our class?
o Count by ones (Ask if there might be a faster way)
o Count by twos – student desks are in twos so we could count by twos.
 Ask which would be faster to find our answer.
 What are some other things would could count by 2s to find a total number faster?
o Do you think it would be faster to count the stars on the flag by 1s or 2s?
o The letters of the alphabet?
o The number of cubbies?

o Discuss what skip counting is.
o Whole Group – I do:
 Discuss skip counting for 2s and 5s (page 2)
o Whole Group – We do:
 Skip Counting by 10s (page 3)
o Whole Group – hand out hundreds charts showing skip counting by 2s, 5s, and
10s. (pages 4-6)
o Whole Group – We do:
 Discuss how we can also skip count by higher numbers too, like 100’s.
o Whole Group – We do:
 Word Problems (pages 8-11)
o Short video to briefly discuss skip counting backwards (page 12)
o Partner practice – Activity (directions page 13)

 Teacher walks around the room listening as partners complete their work

 Teacher will walk around to observe the students completing the activity to check for
understanding of skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s.

 Directions and problems will be read to students who have difficulties reading.
