GRAMMAR
A/ PRESENT PERFECT TENSE
ACTIVE FORM: S + have/ has + V3
PASSIVE FORM: S + have/ has + been + V3
GENERAL IDEA: UNSPECIFIED TIME BEFORE NOW

Past Present Future

We use the Present Perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified
time before now. The exact time is not important. We CANNOT use the Present
Perfect with specific time expressions such as: yesterday, one year ago, last week,
when I was a child, when I lived in Japan, at that moment, that day, one day, etc.
We CAN use the Present Perfect with unspecific expressions such as: ever, never,
once, many times, several times, before, so far, already, yet, etc.
Examples:
01 think I have seen that movie twenty times.
The concept of "unspecified time" can be very confusing to English learners. It
is best to associate Present Perfect with the following topics:
TOPIC 1: Experience el have been to
France many times.
TOPIC 2: Change Over Time o You have grown
since the last time I saw you.
TOPIC 3: Accomplishments
'Man has walked on the Moon.
TOPIC 4: An Uncompleted Action You Are Expecting eSusan hasn 't
mastered Japanese, but she can communicate.
TOPIC 5: Multiple Actions at Different Times
•She has talked to 3 doctors about her problem, but no one knows why she is
sick.
NOTICE
"Last year" and "in the last year" are very different in meaning. "Last year" means
the year before now, and it is considered a specific time which requires Simple Past. "In the
last year" means from 365 days ago until now. It is not considered a specific time, so it
requires Present Perfect.
• I went to Mexico last year.
(I went to Mexico in the calendar year before this one)
• I have been to Mexico in the last year.
(I have been to Mexico at least once between 365 days ago and now)
Simple past & Present perfect:
Rewrite the sentences

2. She began to play tennis in 1990. She has played tennis since 1990.
3. It began to rain 3 hours ago. It has rained for 3 hours.

months ago.
10. We have not jogged since August. The last time we jogged was in
August.
B/ PASSIVE VOICE
SUBJECT + FINITE "BE" + V3
Some verbs (need, want, require) + V-ing = Passive voice
"LET" is never used in passive voice. It is replaced with "allowed,

permitted" ear" ziresCausative form passive must drop "to be":

HAVE/ GET ST + V3 + BY Sb notExample: Mary began to study
Chinese last year.
Chinese began to be
studied by Mary last year.
TWO OBJECTS:
Only the direct object (next to the verb) can become passive
subject.
We gave Ritah some advice. *Ritah was
given some advice.
e We gave some advice to Ritah.
Some advice was given to Ritah.
IMPERSONAL PASSIVE:
If you want to use an intransitive verb in passive voice, you need an
'ears.impersonal construction — therefore this passive is called
Impersonal Passive.
Example: He says that ...
is said that
In English, impersonal passive is only possible with
verbs of perception
(say, think, know, rumour).
e filmExample: They say that women live longer than men.

V-ing
BEIN
G
It is said that women
live longer than men.
e filmPERSONAL PASSIVE:
Impersonal Passive is possible, but Personal Passive is more common.

B/ GERUND (V ING)
1. V-ing used as a noun
Tiéng Anh

When a verb ends with -ing, it may be a gerund or a present participle. It is important to
understand that they are not the same.
When we use a verb in -ing form more like a noun, it is usually a gerund:
• Ež£bžngisfun. (fish)
When we use a verb in -ing form more like an adjective, it is usually a present
participle:
Anthony isfiüug (fish)
• I have a teacher. (bore)
2. Gerunds as Subject, Object (including prepositional objects) or
Complement
Like nouns, gerunds can be the subject, object or complement of a sentence.
• Smoking costs a lot of money. (smoke)
• I don't like writing. (write)
• My favourite occupation is reading. (read)
I am looking forward to meeting you. (meet)
• Do you object to working late? (work)
We sometimes use one verb after another verb. The second verb is often in
the infinitive form, but some verbs require gerunds. They are:
admit, appreciate, avoid, carry on, consider, defer, delay, deny, detest, dislike, endure,
enjoy, escape, excuse, face, feel like, finish, forgive, give up, can't help, imagine, involve,
leave off, mention, mind, miss, postpone, practise, put off) you
report, resent, risk, can't stand, suggest, understand.
Gerunds in Passive Sense:
• I have three shirts that need washing. (need to be washed)
