SECTION A
Q1 Derive the equation of heat conduction in cylindrical coordinate 5
system in three dimensions and reduce the equation so derived to

A steam pipe, 7.5 cm external diameter and 25m long, conveys 5
1000kg of steam per hour at a pressure of 20 bar. The steam enters
the pipe with dryness fraction 0.98 and it is required that the steam at
exit from the pipe must have a minimum dryness fraction of 0.96.
The task is accomplished by suitably lagging the pipe; the thermal
conductivity of the lagging being 0.7 kJ/m-hr-deg. Neglecting
thermal resistance of the steam pipe (no temperature drop across the
steam pipe, determine the minimum thickness of lagging required to
meet the necessary conditions. The temperature at the outside
surface of lagging is taken as 25 0C.
Also determine the temperature at the point half way between the
inner and outer surfaces

Q7 A feed water heater which supplies hot water to a boiler comprises a 5
one-shell pass and two-tube pass heat exchanger. The unit has 100
thin walled tubes of 20 mm diameter and space limitations restrict
the tube length of 2 m per mass. Saturated steam condensers at 1 atm
(tsat = 100o C) on surface of the tubes with connective coefficient
10kW/m2-deg. If water enters the tube at 10kg/s and 15o C,
determine overall heat transfer coefficient and temperature of water
at exist. Use the following fluid properties and make calculations on
arithmetic mean temperature difference. cp = 4180 J/kg K ; µ = 0.6 ×
10-3 Ns/m2 ;
k= 0.64 W/m-deg ; ρ = 1000 kg/m3

Q2 A straight fin of rectangular profile is constructed of stainless steel 5
(18% Cr, 8% Ni) and has a length of 5 cm and a thickness of 2.5 cm.
The base temperature is maintained at 100 0C and the fin is exposed to

Q6 Two parallel square plates, each 4m2 area, are large compared to a gap 5
of 5mm separating them. One plate has a temperature of 800K and
surface emissivity of 0.6, while the other has a temperature of 300K
and a surface emissivity 0.9.Find the net energy exchange by radiation
between the plates. If a thin polished metal sheet of surface emissivity
0.1 on both sides is now located centrally between the two plates,
what will be its steady state temperature? How the heat transfer would
be altered? Neglect the convection and the edge effects if any.
Q7 In a single-pass counter flow heat exchanger, 1800 kg/hr of ethylene 5
glycol is cooled from 100oC to 60oC by cooling water that enters the
annular space of the heat exchanger at 15oC and has a mass flow rate
of 1200 kg/hr Calculate (a) overall heat transfer coefficient if
convective heat transfer coefficient of water side is 31400 kJ/m 2-hr-
deg, (b) necessary length of copper tubing if it has an internal
diameter of 1.25 cm. Also calculate the length of the tube required if
water flows in the same direction as ethylene glycol. For turbulent
flow of fluid inside tube, the Dittus-Boelter relationship,
Nu = 0.023 (Re)0.8 (Pr)0.4 is to be used. The relevant physical
properties of ethylene glycol at its a bulk temperature, t b = (100+60)/2
= 80oC are:
cp = 2.65 kJ/kg K ; µ = 11.72 kg/hr- m ; k= 0.942 kJ/m-hr-deg
