A steam pipe, 7.5 cm external diameter and 25m long, conveys 5
1000kg of steam per hour at a pressure of 20 bar. The steam enters
the pipe with dryness fraction 0.98 and it is required that the steam at
exit from the pipe must have a minimum dryness fraction of 0.96.
The task is accomplished by suitably lagging the pipe; the thermal
conductivity of the lagging being 0.7 kJ/m-hr-deg. Neglecting
thermal resistance of the steam pipe (no temperature drop across the
steam pipe, determine the minimum thickness of lagging required to
meet the necessary conditions. The temperature at the outside
surface of lagging is taken as 25 0C.
Also determine the temperature at the point half way between the
inner and outer surfaces
Q4 For natural convection using dimensional analysis prove that 5
Nu=φ(Gr ,Pr )
taking h=f ( L , ρ , μ , k , ΔT , β , g , c p )
Q5 Find the relation for film condensation over a vertical flat plate, 5
stating the assumptions made
SECTION B
Q6 Two parallel square plates, each 4m2 area, are large compared to a gap 5
of 5mm separating them. One plate has a temperature of 800K and
surface emissivity of 0.6, while the other has a temperature of 300K
and a surface emissivity 0.9.Find the net energy exchange by radiation
between the plates. If a thin polished metal sheet of surface emissivity
0.1 on both sides is now located centrally between the two plates,
what will be its steady state temperature? How the heat transfer would
be altered? Neglect the convection and the edge effects if any.
Q7 In a single-pass counter flow heat exchanger, 1800 kg/hr of ethylene 5
glycol is cooled from 100oC to 60oC by cooling water that enters the
annular space of the heat exchanger at 15oC and has a mass flow rate
of 1200 kg/hr Calculate (a) overall heat transfer coefficient if
convective heat transfer coefficient of water side is 31400 kJ/m 2-hr-
deg, (b) necessary length of copper tubing if it has an internal
diameter of 1.25 cm. Also calculate the length of the tube required if
water flows in the same direction as ethylene glycol. For turbulent
flow of fluid inside tube, the Dittus-Boelter relationship,
Nu = 0.023 (Re)0.8 (Pr)0.4 is to be used. The relevant physical
properties of ethylene glycol at its a bulk temperature, t b = (100+60)/2
= 80oC are:
cp = 2.65 kJ/kg K ; µ = 11.72 kg/hr- m ; k= 0.942 kJ/m-hr-deg
Q8 For counter flow heat exchanger, derive the expression for the 5
effectiveness using NTU method.
