Kyla Dadula Bagaboyboy is a Science and Technology Education Center (STEC) alumnus
batch 2018-2019. She is a 1 st year college student and is currently studying at the Siliman
University taking up Bachelor of Science in Architecture.
For her, the subjects that she finds easy to deal with are those subjects related to
Drawing and Arts while Building Technology & Calculus is the subject that she finds difficult
because of “Teacher factor”: Professors disregards the fact that they are only freshmen
students yearning to be nurtured in the field they chose. The Professors tend to expect too
much from the students without bothering to ask if students understand the lesson/are
confuses, there are also foreign terminologies that are introduced without further explanations
and considering also the “Time Factor”: The lecture time usually consumes so much of the class
time that they are left speeding up for the studio works which usually ends up unfinished and
incomplete. By the end of the class, how she managed her time is tested but it is in her to find
out that it is unjust for them to always cram by the end of the long lecture time. But never the
less, she managed to aid it with the thought of, if she wants to stay longer in this course, she
needs to learn the art of time-management as an architecture student. Sleepless nights are
inevitable for her but one important thing is sleep. Sleep is essential not only for students in her
course but also to other courses as we all equally struggle for them to accomplish certain goals.
She does not want to have any subjects intended to drop, or subject/s that she wants to
fail. Yes, she still is very determined to continue in her course that she has chosen. According to
her, “We all may not be in our best well-being at the moment as everyone is vulnerable, in the
verge of a breakdown, physically and mentally tired and sleep deprived but I still am more that
determined to continue not to prove something to everyone else but because I believe in
myself”. She added that loaded plates and miniature works are the most difficult part in her
activities because it takes a lot of time and nights to finish.
She is still not certain whether or not she needs to pass an exam in the third year level in
order to proceed in the course. For her, it is very practical that she took up the Architecture
course because a lot of opportunities awaits her as she finish college. It is not only because
Architects are in demand in different parts of the world but because of the fact that architects
are builders, they are functioning members of the society and they will build our community for
the better.
Her plans after college would probably be finding a good firm after college is not a bad
idea. She wants to be sure and is assured with whatever I will get myself involved with, with
who her boss is and with what is she getting into. Of course it will be worth her time and effort
even if it means failing and failing but that is not an indicator for her to stop because again, she
believes in capabilities and skills. It does not guarantee her with an immediate/reliable job offer
or big salary and then there is the fun of exploring and learning something new beyond college.
She also stated that, “Experience will always be my number one teacher and that makes me
grateful although I know that I am not considering practicality in this situation.”

Matthew Dune Joel Oville is an alumnus of the Science and Technology Education
Center (STEC) under the STEM Engineering strand batch 2018-2019 is now currently
studying at the University of San Carlos taking up Bachelor of Science in Chemical
Engineering. So far, Calculus 2 is the subject he finds easy compared to Physics for
Engineers and Analytical Chemistry which are currently big challenges for him.

The reason why he struggle in those subjects is the professors' way of teaching
and the pressure of the fact that the following teachers has since been known to easily
give a failing grade to the majority of the class they handle. Another reason is that
Physics and Analytical Chemistry is divided into two different subjects, a Lecture and a
Laboratory subject, giving him more workload.

He couldn't really say that he have successfully coped up with these problems but
he is trying to by working harder to easily understand the topics of the lectures and
properly execute laboratory works. He also said that, “Every day is a struggle to keep up
with the lessons and a challenge to keeping my mental, physical and emotional health in
good condition.” This is also true to us STEM students here at STEC.

As much as he wants to drop certain subjects due to "terror" professors, he could

not because of the scholarship he has from the government, and their department also
would not allow such action. And thankfully, so far, he hasn’t had a failing grade on any
subjects during the past semester.

He is trying his hardest to keep him determined and motivated with his course
because it was always his dream to finish this said course and pursue a career as a
Chemical Engineer. He also have highlighted that everything in his course, unfortunately,
is very challenging and one example was when they had to perform an experiment in
Analytical Chemistry where we determine a certain percentage of a compound produced
in a chemical reaction from an unknown sample and as he was finishing the procedures,
his container for the 2nd trial shattered! He had no other choice but to redo the
experiment for the second trial and thankfully, he still got it finished on time.

He hasn’t heard about the need to pass an exam in order to pursue his course so
far from their department but it could be probable. But he is still hoping that there
wouldn't be one.

He does think that it is practical to choose Engineering because it guarantees an

immediate job for a graduate and most especially, a licensed Engineer. After college, he
is hoping to pursue a Master's degree which he have no particular choice yet, he is still
trying to graduate. I also agree to him when he said that it will be worth all the sacrifices
and effort though it is really hard to pursue an engineering course but never the less, for
sure it will it guarantee you with an immediate or reliable job offer and big salary in the
end.
