Homework in Insulation Materials

2019 - 2020
Thermal Insulation

HW (1): Calculate the size of air-conditioning (tons) required to cool a room of 8 m x 5 m x 3 m

before and after the insulation. Note that the materials of the walls and the roof are shown in the
figures below. Neglect the effect of radiation and convection heat transfer. Add 4000 W to the total
load due to the heat gained through windows, ventilation, occupants and equipment.
KBrick=0.5, KMasonary wall=1.2, KGypsum=0.8, KPolystyrene=0.08, Kconcrete tiles=0.8, KAcrylic=0.2, KRC=2

Wall section Roof section

Ans. 3.66 TR, 1.92 TR

HW (2): A room of 6 x 4 x 3 m3 as shown in the figure below. What is the difference in air-conditioning if EPS
is replaced by air gap. The additional heat due to other sources is 3400 W. (∆T=20 oC).
KPlaster=1, KEPS=0.05, KGypsum=0.8, KBrick=0.5, KR.C.=2, KFiberglass=0.06, KAir =0.025

Ans. 7%
Electrical Insulation
HW (1): Select from the table, the proper dielectric material that sa sfies a capacitor of 14x10-9
coulomb/m2 field charge under 3 V between plates of 1 cm x 2 cm area and spaced 4 mm apart.
Then find the capacitance.

Material
Coal 1.5-2.0
PTFE/Teflon 2.0-2.2
Polypropylene 2.2-2.4
Polystyrene 2.4-2.6
Carbon disulfide 2.6-2.8

Ans. PTFE/Teflon, 0.935 pF

HW (2): Select the material and the number of insulated discs required to withstand working
voltage of 132 kV where the safety factor is (1.7). Take into account that the length of each disc is
15 cm and that the client has requested a total length not exceed 80 cm.

Ans. Glass, 4 discs

HW (3): A square parallel plate capacitor with plate area of 100 cm2 has plate separa on of 3mm.
The airspace between the plates is partially filled by two 1 mm thick dielectric slabs, as shown in
the figure. One slab has a constant of 2.5 and the other slab has a constant of 4. Compute the
capacitance of the system.

Note: for parallel slabs;

Ans. C = 54 pF

HW (4): Using the equation 1 , prove that for a vacuum χ = 0

HW (5): Compare between insulators for different OPL voltages.
