Objective/s: 1. describe the characteristics of an element and compound;
2. distinguish elements from compounds based on a set of properties; and
3. classify substances as either element or compound.

In this module, you will find out that substances maybe further classified into two: elements and
compounds. Read the introductory message and what the student is expected to learn.

9:03-9:15 What I Know (Lesson 1)


Read and analyze the 10 item multiple choice questions and 5 item identification type of test. Write
the answers on a separate answer sheet. This aims to check what the student already know about the
lesson to take. If he/she gets all the answers correct (100%), he/she may decide to skip this module.
But for further learning, it is suggested to continue on with the module.

Read the poem THE LOST ELEMENT and answer the question inside the box.

Can you identify the elements found in the given set of compounds? Write the elements in the boxes
after the name of the compound.

Name new metallic elements and set of compounds that is not found in the selection? Write it inside

Using the Venn Diagram, describe the characteristics of elements and compounds.

Read the paragraph and identify the correct words that fit in the given sentences inside the box.

Look and bring any food product label. Paste your chosen food product label in
the box. Identify which of the substances are classified as elements and compounds.
From the contained compounds, choose three and determine the constituent elements. Use extra sheet
if necessary.
9:45-9:50 Assessment (Lesson 1)
Answer the 15 item assessment very carefully. This will measure the understanding of module 2
Lesson 1. This will also be the basis if the student will be given further remediation and assistance
about the topic.
9:50-10:05 Additional Activities (Lesson 1)
Segregate the words inside the garbage into element or compound.
