Quetzal Collections, Inc., a distributor of South American and African artifacts in 4 major cities of the U.S., faces
increasing competition and external environment threats. The firm is trying to expand and improve the product line
towards a competitor, they including retailers now enter the market and undercutting Quetzal. David Olsen, Director
of Procurement, and Myron Rangard, the firm's national sales manager, are presented a major contract for the
purchase of $750,000 in Quetzal merchandise including the supply of replicas.
Considering the firm's position, Olsen and Rangard must decide whether or not accepting the contract is the best
course of action for the firm as a whole.
Alternatives
New products should be introduced like current arts under consideration of ethical and cultural aspects. Quetzal
Collection, Inc. would be motivated to keep its customers and can gain new ones. It tries to change customer
demands as well as to changing accessibility to their products. They kept the image and brand name and used their
knowledge in the market and the broad network.
The firm risks rejection of new products and litter experience in marketing can influence sales.
2. Reject the offer and keep current strategy
As we know, only in the short run is possible not to participate in the mass merchandising and no change in strategy

of exclusive and high-quality products. New strategy will help the introduction of new product lines like current
artifacts. The disadvantage is the current loss of 750.000 US $ and on the longer run 4 mills. US $. The startup costs
can be too high to be burdened by Quetzal Collection, Inc. Also, CEOs lack experiences in marketing new product
lines.
Course of action
The decision should have the overall aim to secure long time business and to maximize profit optimally in the short
and in the long run by updating the existing. Quetzal Collection, Inc. will accept the offer by the mass
merchandizing department store only under the regulations given in 3 and
will adjust the current strategy as discussed in 2.
Depending on the discussed actions Quetzal Collections, Inc. would be able to increase existing profit by 4 Mill.
US$ in the short run and also because of changing existing strategy the profit will probably increase additionally in
the short run and in the long run.
The contract will be developed where all these important aspects will be fixed and will help with the
contract to the merchandizing department store. The business will start only if this contract secures the
brand name and the market position of Quetzal’s existing products in the market and will give Quetzal the
chance to get additional customers in the mass merchandizing field of the total market. In contract should
be foreseen necessary actions to secure the quantities of replica, which must be produced by production
methods which ideally have lower costs, quality determine and distribution channels secured.
