Word 1 до till do
CULTURAL INSIGHT
Bulgarians use a lot of words borrowed from other languages, and one of these is used for
“Goodbye.”! In Bulgaria, we say "Чао" (Ciao) just like Italians. But unlike Italian, it is used only
for saying "Goodbye" and never ever for a "hello." You might hear it used quite often among
friends in Bulgaria. Try to say it yourself to your Bulgarian friends! Ciao!

CULTURAL INSIGHT
Remember Чао (Ciao) from the last lesson? Bulgarians use another loanword for "thank you",
and this time it is the French Мерси (Merci.) If you're not sure about whether to use мерси or
благодаря, keeping it simple is always your safest bet. You don't have to worry about formal
or informal situations; благодаря and almost all expressions containing it can be used with
just about anyone, anywhere, and at anytime!

Word 1 не not ne
CULTURAL INSIGHT
When you apologize in Bulgarian for something you did in the past, you might use two slightly
different expressions. If you say Не го мислех., you feel fully contrite for what you said and
literally mean "I was not thinking when I said it." If you think that the other person did not
understand you right, you should say Нямах това предвид., or "I did not mean this." Then,
you might not feel fully contrite but would like to explain yourself more clearly.

When you refuse something, make sure to sound sorry. As long as you show you are truly
sorry, people will make no complaints and accept it. If you say it without adding any emotion
or a bit harshly, it can actually sound rude and might provoke people to further comment on
your apology.

BULGARI ANPOD101.COM 3-MI NUT E BULGARI AN S 1 #11 - HOW T O READ PRI CES 4
One last tricky part. In spoken language, Bulgarian people use -йсе or -десе instead of the
word for "ten," десет, when they pronounce the numbers from 11 to 90. For example,
единайсе or осемдесе which are 11 and 80. Or instead of Двадесет и шест лева и
седемдесет стотинки, you can say Двайсе и шес лева и седемдесе стотинки. It is
easier to pronounce them this way, but the formal and written language require the full form.

otherwise it may sound a bit rude or suspicious.

CULTURAL INSIGHT
In Bulgarian, you can use the verbs харесвам which means ""to like"" and обичам ""to love""
interchangeablu, when you want to express that you like something.
For example, you can hear someone expressing their musical taste like this - Харесвам джаз
музика. This means ""I like jazz music."" or Обичам джаз музика., meaning ""I love jazz
music."

CULTURAL INSIGHT
When inviting someone to enter a room, as in "Come in!", Bulgarians do not use the verb
come идвам, but “enter”, which is влизам" instead, as in Влез! Влезте! To sound even
friendlier, we follow the invitation to enter by the phrase Заповядайте, which is the same one
used in the expressions "here you are" and "help yourself". So, it will be Влезте!
Заповядайте!

CULTURAL INSIGHT
In the days past, when the whole family was using one landline phone, people would answer
the phone by saying their name, or the family name. But nowadays, a lot of households rely
solely on mobile phones. Therefore, you would probably call a specific person and he or she
is the one to answer directly. Thus, names are no longer said out loud, when answering the
phone. Most often people will answer the phone by saying Ало (Alo) meaning "Hello" when
answering the phone or Да, моля, which literally means "Yes, please."
