INQUIRY-BASED DEMONSTRATION LESSONPLAN IN SCIENCE GRADE SIX

(Guided Inquiry Using 7- E’s)

I. Objectives: At the end of 50-minute period, 75% of the pupils should be able to:

1. Describe the characteristics of the planets as to composition and

movement in the solar system.
2. Arrange the planets from nearest to farthest and vice- versa.
3. Demonstrate appreciation about the importance of the planets in the solar

II. Subject Matter:

A. Topic: Characteristics of The planets

B. References: 1. RBEC Budget of Work

2. Into The Future: Science and Health 6 p. 251
3. Breaking Through Science 6 RBEC Based pp.422-427

C. Materials: Clippings power point presentation

Manila paper art paper
Chart / tables paste/ masking tape
Activity Sheets scissor

D. Concepts:
* There are eight planets in the solar system. These planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars,
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
* Each planet revolves around the sun.
* Planets distances, time, length of revolution and temperature are different.
* Inner planets are called Terrestrial planets while the outer
planets are called Jovian planets.
* Inner Planets revolve around the sun faster than Outer Planets.
* Outer Planets rotate on their axes faster than the Inner Planets.
* All planets except Venus and Uranus rotate in counter-clockwise direction or
from West to East.
* Orbit is the imaginary path where planets move around the sun.

E. Science Processes: Observing, Comparing, Inferring, Inferring, Characterizing,

Communicating,
F. Infused Value: Appreciation to Mother Nature and the solar system

G. Integration: English Subject

H. GAD Infusion: The planet Earth is where people, plants and animals live. God has provided all
the necessary things all living things need in order to live. Therefore, whatever God has given us, we need
to protect, preserve and utilize all these things wisely.

III. Procedure/Teaching Strategy:

A. ELICIT

Singing of the Science Song: “It’s Our Science Time”

(Post a picture of the Solar System)
Say: Look at the illustration. What do you know about the picture? Tell something about it.

B. ENGAGE
1. Review: Unscramble the letters to form new words being describe in each statement.

This means the spinning of the planet on its axis.(TAOOTNIR)

This is the movement of the planet around the sun.( VORETOINUL)
This refers to the equal day and night in the different places of the world.(NOXESQUEI)
These are members of the solar system where some of which have one or more satellites that revolve around
the sun. (NEPASTL)

2. Motivation:
The teacher will play the song over the projector.
Ask: Did you like the song?
What does the song tell us about?
According to the song, What can you do/contribute to keep the world protected and safe?
Are there other planets in the solar system? Let’s find out.

C. EXPLORATION

A. Activity
This time, we will be doing an activity to find out the different composition and movement
of the planets in the solar system.
Grouping of the pupils and setting of the standards to be followed.
The teacher will distribute the materials and the activity sheets by group.
(Please see activity sheets)

Have the group perform the activity following the standards. The teacher will supervise
the group work.

D. EXPLANATION

Allow each group reporter to report their findings /observations about the activity
performed. The teacher will check the groups’ outputs.

ASK: How do you feel about the activity?

What is something you can still remember about the planet assigned to you?
What is the planet of living things?
How do planets move? Where do planets pass as they move around the sun?

E. ELABORATION

Using the power point presentation, the teacher tells additional background of
Information about the solar system. (Science Made Easy Figure 39.3 and 39.4)

Ask:
How do planets move? In what direction do planets rotate? What about revolution?
How are the planets arranged according to their distance from the sun? Which is the nearest? Farthest?
What are the inner planets? Why are they called inner planets? What is the other term for inner planets?
What are they made of?
What are the outer planets? Why are they called outer planets? What is the other term for outer planets?
What are they made of?

Activity: To recall the planets in the solar system, try to complete the sentence using the
words in the list. (Arrange the planets from nearest to farthest from the sun)

1. Jupiter - Just
2. Earth - Early
3. Mars - Mother
4. Mercury - My
5. Neptune - Noodles
6. Venus - Very
7. Uranus - Us
8. Saturn - Served

Sentence: My Very Early Mother Just Served Us Noodles

GAD INFUSION:
Now that you know the importance of the planet especially the Earth we live in, What will
you do to keep our mother Earth a better place to live in?

IV. EVALUATION:
Direction: Read the statement carefully. Choose the letter of the correct answer.

_____1. Which of the following is the center of the solar system?

A. Mercury C. Venus
B. Sun D. Pluto

_____ 2. This is the planet where we plant trees and vegetables and where both people and
animals live.
A. Mercury C. Earth
B. Venus D. Mars

_____ 3. Which is the most beautiful planet in the solar system?

A. Jupiter C. Neptune
B. Saturn D. Mars

_____ 4. Why do planets do not collide as they move around the sun?
A. Because the planets are not of the same size.
B. Because the planets move in different direction.
C. Because the planets have their own orbit.
D. Because the planets move in different speed.

_____5. Which are called the terrestrial planets?

A. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars C. Mars, Venus, Uranus, Pluto
B. Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto D. Earth, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn
