Only ONE Character

ENGLISH 1119/MODULE/SPM/PPDTM 87
Based on the novel ‘Sing to The Dawn’ by Minfong Ho, I realized there are two
major characters and they are Dawan and Kwai. I choose Dawan in my essay. Dawan is a
thirteen years old girl who has a brother named Kwai. Living in the village of Thailand,
Dawan was not supposed to be sent to school because of the discrimination system where girls
were not supposed to go to school. Moreover, in future their life will only become the wife and
the mother.
One of Dawan characteristics is she determined person. Although she was supposed to
stay at home, but because of her determination to go to school she determined to face her
father to ask for permission. After her father rejected her pledge, she was lucky because Kwai
decided to persuade their father to get the permission.
Dawan is also a brave girl. In order to achieve her dream, she bravely go to school and
study in the same class with Kwai. Although she had never been to school but finally she
managed to get first place in the exam and as reward she got a scholarship to continue her
study at the city.
She loves and cares about her brother Kwai. After the result was announced by the
teacher, Kwai got the second place. Kwai cannot accept the fact that he lost his chance to his
sister. Although she had won the scholarship she did not belittle her brother’s ability. After
the fight at the market, which Dawan hurt her ankle, she went to the old bridge to soothe herself.
She was surprised to see her brother, Kwai. She went to talk to him nicely and being a caring
sister, she forgot her pain. As it began to rain, Dawan intented to leave but not Kwai. She was
not selfish at all and she left her umbrella for Kwai to shelter. That showed Dawan was truly
a caring person.
In a nutshell, Dawan is a good role model for teenagers. Her determination, bravery
and caring traits are good examples to be followed by youngsters. In addition, if we want to
succeed in life, we must possess these characteristics and Dawan has led us the way.

Based on the novel ‘Sing to The Dawn’ by Minfong Ho, I realized there are many
scenes in the story which affected me emotionally when I read it. A scene that makes me happy
is when Dawan got the first place and had been rewarded a scholarship to study at the city.
The story tells about a thirteen year old girl named Dawan who lived in a village had to go
through lots of challenges before she could go to school and finally won a scholarship that
would allow her to go to study in the city. Despite that good news, Dawan had to desperately
try to encourage the people of the village especially her family where gender discrimination
was so obvious, to support her in order to convince her father to give his permission for her to
study in the city 1. First
point

ENGLISH 1119/MODULE/SPM/PPDTM 89
The scene that made me happy started when Dawan finally got her father’s approval to
go study in the city. It was not an easy task for Dawan as she has to go and beg for her sake to
go to school. She started with her father but was rejected by him as he said sending a daughter to
school was the foolish things to do. Next, Dawan and Kwai bravely faced their father in order to
convince him to allow Dawan to study in the city school as it was her right because she had got
the first place in the examination.
Evidence

Their father refused to listen and insisted that Kwai should be the one and not Dawan
because he thought that education for girls was useless. He also stated that he had the power to
prevent Dawan from going to the city although he didn’t have the right. Unable to keep her
mouth shut, Dawan told her father that he should not misuse the power he had and reconsider his
choice. Dawan begged her father to let her study in the city and compared herself with a ceged
bird which was about to spread its wing in order to fly in the free sky. In the end, the father
agreed to let Dawan go to study in the city.
Elaboration

Moreover, in my opinion, the reason why I feel happy about the scene was
because it showed that all Dawan’s hardwork had finally paid off. Second
point
Dawan desperately tried to collect support from people around the village such as her
cousin, Noi and the head monk to convince her father to allow her to study in the city school. In
the end, without relying on anyone, Dawan with her brother, Kwai bravely decided to face their
father to convince him to allow Dawan to study. Evidence

The scene also showed Kwai chose to support his sister, Dawan in the end although he
had to sacrifice his chance to go study in the city as it was his sister’s right. This proves that
Dawan and Kwai had a closed siblings relationship between them and both shared the same
dream which was to study in the city school and come back to help the villagers.

Elaboration

Last but not least, the scene also made me happy because the father finally realised that
he should not discriminate a person by her gender. Third point

ENGLISH 1119/MODULE/SPM/PPDTM 90
This was shown when the father finally agreed to let Dawan continue her study in the big
city although he once thought that further education for girl was useless as they would only
become a wife and a mother. Evidence

The father also realized Dawan’s conviction and her determination to help the
villagers. The father then realized his faults and finally agreed to allow to study in the
city.
Elaboration
n

As conclusion, the scene where Dawan finally go by her father’s approval to study in the
big city is really a scene that make me feel happy as it shows the importance of
determination in life, siblings love and finally the end of gender discrimination.

Conclusion is a must
