PSA PEUGEOT - CITROËN
SOUNDPROOFING - ACOUSTIC ABSORBENTS - SPECIFICATION B65 4251 4/25

1.OBJECT AND FIELD OF APPLICATION

The present standard defines the technical characteristics to which must satisfy acoustic absorbents.
This standard applies to planar or moulded acoustic absorbents, made up by single materials or complexes.
The materials being the subject of a procedure of setting in Material data sheet (FTM) must answer to this present
standard.
This standard does not apply to the absorbents employed in engine compartment as soundproofing under bonnet,
sound-deadening material of apron, sound-deadening material isovac… which make part of a specific standard
“standard Complex Material for engine soundproofing” and associated with the FTM Complex Engine
Soundproofing.
Absorbents are the products which fulfill the function “acoustic absorption”. This expression indicates the
dissipation of sound energy in a material subjected to a its incident.
The absorptivity of sound energy of a material is expressed by the absorption coefficient α which can be given by:
 The tube with impedance which gives an absorption coefficient in planar waves, variable with the frequency
and expressed as a percentage: α plan.
These measurements are taken on several planar specimens taken on a part.
The results of measurement are presented in the form of an averaged curve (α plan according to the
frequency).
 The alpha cabin which gives an absorption coefficient in diffused fields, variable with the frequency and
expressed as a percentage: α diffus.
These measurements are taken on a planar specimen of 1.2m² and / or on a part.
The results of measurement are presented in the form of a curve:
 α diffus according to the frequency, for a specimen,
 equivalent absorption surface corrected according to the frequency for a moulted or a planar part.
Standard curves are established. They permit to index the absorbents in acoustic effectiveness class (class
A to G) (see Appendix 1).
Note: The equivalent absorption surface corrected corresponds to a total absorbent surface
(absorption coefficient α = 100%) which has the same absorption capacity of the considered
part.
The absorbents often consist of a porous material (fibrous or cellular). They can be covered with an appearance
material with possibly a material of towards:
 the appearance material can be composed by textile (nonwoven, woven or knitted),
 the towards material generally consists of nonwoven.
In the case of absorbent comprising glass fiber, the glass fiber rate in the air of the work stations (preparation,
assembly) must not exceed the value of e 0.1 fiber/cm3 according to INRS recommendations.
Respirable and non respirable fibers are defined according to documentary note INRS N° ND 1804:
 Respirable fibers: length higher than 5m, rate of length and inferior diameter of 3m and inferior diameter
of 3m.
 Nonrespirable fibers: length higher than 5m, rate of length on inferior diameter of 3m and superior
diameter of 3m.

Numerical relays
(1) Supports of serie all types.

(2) The receiver support must be capable of bonding, which means:

 clean,
 without contamination,
 without condensation.
For this, the assembly station of the brought support must also be clean (without dust, grease or anti-adherent
product …).
In no case, the temperature of the receiver support must be lower than the one of the workshop (the condensation
created by the fact of bringing a cold part in a warm workshop is absolutely no compatible to a good bonding). If the
temperature is lower than 15 °C, warm up the receiver support.
In case of surface contamination (dust, trace of grease…), cleaning with an alcohol-logged fluffless absorbent
paper (denatured ethanol or isopropanol) is necessary before bonding.

(3) Self-adhesive cellular materials with protective film which at least one face is anti-adherent.

(4) Case of bond parts in UP: the transportation and storage of parts are sheltered from humidity and from every kind
of exterior contamination. No separation of the protective film or damage of parts is tolerated during the
transportation and the storage.
The temperature of storage is between -10°C and 50°C; avoid the exposure of the parts near important heat source.
The part must be separated from its protective film without degradation or tear or loss of adherent power and even
after storing up to 12 months in the conditions indicated above.
Case of delivered parts in UP, already fitted or bounded: No degradation, no tear, no separation are tolerated
during the transportation and the storage in the temperature range of -20°C and 50°C before fitting on body.
(5) The implementation of these parts is realized manually. The temperature of the receiver support, when bonding, is
between 15°C and 40°C. A light reheat at 35°C or 40°C reactivates the glue and improves the immediate adhesive
strength (specifically for the parts which are not bounded to the plan supports).
Do not withdraw the protective film beforehand. Every part coming from the storage with a piece of protective film
removed is put aside.
Avoid every contact of the adhesive with a contaminated surface, in particular with hands or any other support.
The pressurization of each part is mandatory to guarantee a good adhesive bonding.
The pressurization can be done :
 with a rubber roll,
 by hand smoothing,
 by inflatable bladder,
 etc.
During the pressurization, do not deteriorate or tear the part.
Note: For parts which are glued on many plans, do not stretch the part during the application or glue under stress.
Place the part before cladding in order to avoid any separation or reattachment which damages the adhesive.
(6) To check the adhesive strength, carry out the test of peeling at right angle according to the test method D51 1485 or
the test of tensile shear strength according to the test method D41 1108 following the thickness, the density and the
hardness of the material. However, give priority to peeling at right angle.
