1.Abstract

RCC flat slab requires flexural strengthening due to omission of extra

reinforcement in the bottom of slab. Omitted reinforcement consists 12 mm dia
bars@400 mm c/c. Though there is no any crack or deflection observed in the slab.

2. Objective

The objective of this report is to provide basic principle of strengthening of

flat slab to enhance its flexural capacity.

3. Scope

The scope of this report is limited to providing basic principle for flat slab
strengthening. The analysis of the full structure is beyond the scope of this work.
The strengthening system is suggested as per the data provided by the client.
4. About FRP

Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) composites comprise fibres of high tensile

strength within a polymer matrix such as vinylester or epoxy. FRP
composites have emerged from being exotic materials used only in niche
applications following the Second World War, to common engineering materials
used in a diverse range of applications such as aircraft, helicopters, space-
craft, satellites, ships, submarines, automobiles, chemical processing
equipment, sporting goods and civil infrastructure. The role of FRP for
strengthening of existing or new reinforced concrete structures is growing at an
extremely rapid pace owing mainly to the ease and speed of construction, and the
possibility of application without disturbing the existing functionality of the
structure.

4. Design Principle

Properties of 400 GSM Unidirectional carbon fiber :

Modulus of elasticity : 235 Gpa

Ultimate tensile strength : 3500 Mpa

Ultimate strain : 0.0155

Thickness of FRP jacket with 400 GSM fabric : 1 mm

To calculate effective tensile strength :-

The effective strain considered for design of flexural strengthening shall not
exceed more than 50% of its capacity for safe and conservative design.

Therefore,

εfe = 0.00775

effective tensile strength = 235000*0.00775

= 1821.25 Mpa

As effective tensile strength is more than double of yield tensile strength of steel,
design principle is based on the fact that one strip of FRP made of 400 GSM
carbon fiber can replace flexural deficiency caused by omission of two bars of 12
mm dia.

Design Scheme :

Providing 100 mm width strips of 400 GSM Unidirectional Carbon fiber sheet@
400 mm c/c.
