strengthening system
Background
Concrete of proposed stadia steps has shown grade loss from 30 Mpa to 25 Mpa as per NDT
and destructive test report shared by client. As per clause no.17.4.3 of IS 456-2000, 15% grade
loss is acceptable. Considering durability factor, it is necessary to strengthen defective concrete
using FRP confinement wraps.
FRP
Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) composites comprise fibres of high tensile strength within a
polymer matrix such as vinylester or epoxy. FRP composites have emerged from being exotic
materials used only in niche applications following the Second World War, to common
engineering materials used in a diverse range of applications such as aircraft, helicopters,
space-craft, satellites, ships, submarines, automobiles, chemical processing equipment,
sporting goods and civil infrastructure. The role of FRP for strengthening of existing or new
reinforced concrete structures is growing at an extremely rapid pace owing mainly to the ease
and speed of construction, and the possibility of application without disturbing the existing
functionality of the structure.
As per basic guidelines given in ACI 440.2R.2017, we recommend single wrap of bidirectional
200 GSM carbon fiber for fortification. As width and length ratio of step is high, we recommend
fiber anchors as an anti-slip treatment to secure confinement craps.
Repairing system: -
Type of product to be for repairing of particular crack is depending on its nature and type.
For hair line cracks on slab substrate, we suggest low viscosity epoxy grouting. It involves
fixing of injection spouts at regular intervals of 1m c/c and injection of grout through it.
For comparatively wider cracks, we suggest crack widening in form of V grove and filling it
using epoxy base mortar or thixotropic mortar.
Note: -
1) As per IS 456: 2000 up to 15% strength loss is permissible. In that way 25 Mpa strength is permissible
for M30 grade concrete. Nevertheless, considering durability we have suggested minimum FRP
reinforcement for concrete confinement.
2) We have recommended bidirectional fibre system as it possesses strength in both longitudinal and
transverse direction.
