Some countries are struggling with increases in crime rates.

Some believe that having

more police on the streets is the best way to reduce and combat crime. To what extent do
you agree or disagree?

In this day and age, the number of criminal activities is rising at an alarming rate, to the
detriment of people’s safety and the development of a country. While it is undeniable that a
stronger police force will be beneficial in seizing the growth of criminality, I would argue that
there are other equally effective measures.

It is true to some extent that the more policemen there are, the lower the chances of people
committing crimes will be and that any illegal activities can be addressed in a timely manner.
To begin with, the principal function of the law enforcement unit is to keep potential criminals
on the watch, and therefore put a stop to any intention of breaking laws in its infancy. The crime
rate, as a result, will experience a dramatic drop, bringing a sense of security to the
neighborhood. Also, should there be more policemen patrolling the streets, any criminal
activities will be engaged and ended in time. Robbery ,upon reportingbeing reported, can be
stopped with the on-time intervention of the police, preventing any further damage to the
properties as well as the residents. This can only happen when there are enough officers on
duty.

However, to ensure decreases in crime rates, other feasible solutions that are gun control and
education should be put into practice as well. A lot of crimes related to guns have occurred and
the authority should implement stricter laws on the use of this weapon in their country. A ban
on guns in Vietnam, for example, has been deemed tremendously effective in reducing criminal
activities since potential offenders cannot find a means to carry out their schemes. This is not to
say that other weapons are overlooked; however, guns cause more serious damage and if
controlled or even prohibited, they cannot fall into the wrong hands. Another proposal is to
educate people about the cruelty repercussions/consequences/perils of crimes and equip them
with enough knowledge on about/of laws. The lack of proper education is believed to be the
root of most crimes. In other words, a well-educated person is much less likely to commit
crimes when aware of one’s doings and able to have distinction between right and wrong., a
person can redo his or her life with legal means of earning money.

In conclusion, even though the enhancement in terms of quantity for police officers can offer
advantages regarding neighborhood watch , it is not the best approach since controlling guns
better and educating people about the negatives of crimes are just as effective in the war against
crime.
