Topic 1 : Common Classroom Language

List of phrases used by the teacher to:

a. Set the rules

 I want you to work together, take turn using the tablet and take picture.
 What pictures do you think I want you to takes.
 Some of you take living things and noin living things pictures.
 Each group must take three pictures of living things and three pictures of
non living things.
b. Give feed back
 Have you all taken the pictures?
Pupils : yes

Teacher : Very Good, all of you have done a great job.

Topic 2 : Giving Instructions

Review on the teacher's instructions based on the aspects of giving


instructions:

a. Set time limit


 There are phrase highlighted to be used by Science teacher in the
set time limit.
 First phrases :
On the count of three, I want you take of the yellow cloth. Ready 1,2,3.
-Pupils open the yellow cloth at the same time because of time
constraints, they do not scramble.
 Second :
I want you to watch the video carefully, alright can you do that ?
Now let’s watch the second video ?
- Teachers play videos in sequence, this gives students time to think
based on the video they are viewing
 Third :

Now I’m going to give the check list.

- The teacher gives the student a checklist and asks the student to view
the video to answer the checklist. Pupils are given time based on video
views

b. Get pupils' attention

 The teacher get’s pupil attention during the learning activity by


using the phrases below :

1. Are you excited ?


2. Ready 1,2,3.
3. Look carefully
4. We can go now
5. Are you ready to watch the video?

Pupils will be able to pay full attention to their teachers in teaching and learning

activities
c. Use of graded language

 The teacher uses the suitable level language to give the


instructions to pupils. The instructions were given to pupils based
on their learning level taught.

- Graded language were used in the lesson activity.


1. Now we are going to Science Garden.
2. I want you to work together.
3. Can you see on your desk?
4. Can you spell the word ?
5. Now, imagine you’re an a pet shop.
6. Now, look back at all the pictures here.
7. I want you to watch the video carefully.

d. Double 's

 Teachers also use short instructions to give students an understanding of


the activity to be performed. Here are the phrases used most often in
giving directions.

1. Stand up
2. What about this one ?
3. Spell the word
4. Okay, let’s try
5. Say it together
6. Look carefully
7. Okay, write your answer
8. Write down your answer.

Doubles

If too many verbs in one direction students become confused and do not
know which task to perform first. Especially students 7 to 9 years old. They
will be confused by the instructions given by the teacher, so in one
instruction use one or two verbs
Graded

The language used to give instructions is too long and difficult to


understand for a 3rd year student, an example of appropriate instruction:
Find your partner, then arrange the non-linear form of the text provided.
Speak your answers orally.
