The Importance of Honeybees

Standards: CC.1.2.2.B, CC.1.2.2.B, CC.1.2.2.G.


Objectives: Students will apply knowledge learned of honeybees in story to complete the
honeybee activity.
Materials: Fleming, C. (2020) Honeybee. Neal Porter books. Pencil, paper plate, black and
yellow paint, cotton balls, bee cut out.
Procedure:
1. I will first introduce the unit for this week to the students and go over what they will
learn and complete throughout the week.
2. I will then introduce the story “Honeybee” and read the story.
a. I will start by introducing the author and illustrator and explain the awards the
book has won.
b. We will then take the students on a picture walk of the book to see all of the
pictures in the story.
c. After the picture walk I will begin reading the story.
3. After I have finished reading the story, I will ask the students a few questions that
relate to what the students will have to know for the activity.
4. After a small discussion the students will head back to their seats and I will pass out
the materials needed for the activity.
5. I will have the students first write a few sentences about what they learned about
honeybees.
6. Once the students have written their sentence I will pass out the rest of the materials.
7. I will then go step by step of how to create the bee activity.
a. Students will first glue their sentence to the front of the plate.
b. Students will then paint the back of their plate yellow.
c. Students will then take cotton balls and paint black stripes on the bee.
d. After the students finished painting they will cut out their bee cut outs and glue
them onto the bee.
e. Once the students have completed their bees they will go on the back table to
dry.
f. After the bees are dry I will hang them up on display for the rest of the week.
8. Once all of the students have completed their bee I will play a short video on bees to
end the lesson.
Accommodations:
IEP: Students will have the opportunity to paint with paint brushes if they have sensory issues
with the cotton ball.

Parts of the Honeybee

Standards: CC.1.2.2.B, CC.1.2.2.C, CC.1.2.2.G.


Objectives: Students will use the information from the story they learned earlier in the week
to label the different parts of the honeybee
Materials: Let's Learn About Bees | Caitie's Classroom - YouTube,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta154f5Rp5Y&t=95s, Honeybee project handout, glue,
scissors, colored pencils, construction paper.
Procedure:
1. To introduce today's lesson, I will first have a discussion with the class about what we
have already learned about honeybees. We will talk about the story and think about
the different parts of the honeybee.
2. After having a short discussion to get the students thinking about honeybees, I will
show a short video that talks about bees and the different parts of the bee.
3. After the video is over, I will talk about what we learned in the video and the students
will give examples of facts about honeybees.
4. After our discussion, I will pass out the materials needed to create our honeybees
portfolios.
a. I will first pass out construction paper and have the students fold it in half.
b. I will then pass out the title page and have the students glue that to the front of
their construction paper and write their name on the front.
c. Next I will pass out the parts of the body diagram and we will work together to
label the different parts of the bee.
d. After the honeybee is labeled the students will be able to color in their diagram
and their cover page.
e. After the students have finished they will turn in their honeybee folders and
pack up for dismissal.
Accommodations: Students will have the opportunity to pass out different materials to the
class as well as use different materials to complete the project if they have sensory issues
toward the objects.

Life Cycle of the Honeybee

Standards: CC.1.2.2.B, CC.1.2.2.C, CC.1.2.2.G.


Objectives: Students will use the information from the story they learned earlier in the week
to explain the order of the life cycle of a bee.
Materials: The Life Cycle of a Honey Bee - YouTube, bee portfolios, life cycle hand out, glue,
scissors.
Procedure:
1. To introduce the lesson we will first review the material we went over thus far about
honeybees.
2. I will ask the students what they remember about the life cycle of the honey bee from
the information we read in the book Honeybees.
3. After some time discussing, we will watch a short video about the life cycle of the
honey bees.
4. After the video we will talk about the student watched and I will ask a series of
questions that related to the video to promote learning.
5. After discussing, I will pass out the materials needed to continue the Honey bee
portfolios.
6. We will work together step by step on how to put the portfolio together and ask
students what the correct order of the life cycle is.
7. Once the students have put the life cycle of the honey bee together, they will turn it
into the front of the room to be checked.
8. Once the students start to finish up I will work on any coloring details they need to
finish in their portfolios.
Accommodations: Students will have the opportunity to pass out different materials to the
class as well as use different materials to complete the project if they have sensory issues
toward the objects.

The Different Types of Honeybees

Standards: CC.1.2.2.B, CC.1.2.2.C, CC.1.2.2.G.


Objectives: Students will apply what they learned throughout the week to a virtual field trip
and will observe how a beekeeper cares for the bee colony and makes honey.
Materials: Beekeeping - Honey Bee Caste - YouTube, bee portfolios, types of honey bees
handout, glue, scissors.
Procedure:
1. To introduce the lesson we will first review the material we went over thus far about
honeybees.
2. I will ask the students what they remember about the different types of honey bees
from the information we read in the book Honeybees.
3. After some time discussing, we will watch a short video about the different types of
honey bees.
4. After the video we will talk about the student watched and I will ask a series of
questions that related to the video to promote learning.
5. After discussing, I will pass out the materials needed to continue the Honey bee
portfolios.
6. We will work together step by step on how to put the portfolio together and ask
students what each type of honey bee does for the colony.
7. Once the students have matched the honey bee with their duty in the colony, they will
turn it into the front of the room to be checked.

Honeybee Test

Standards: CC.1.2.2.B, CC.1.2.2.C, CC.1.2.2.G, 4.1.2.D


Objectives: Students will apply knowledge learned throughout the unit to take a standardized
test on honeybees.
Materials: Test, pencil, paper, Honeybee review videos
Procedure:
1. We will begin with a short review on honeybees and what we learned throughout the
unit.
2. I will play a review on honeybees video.
3. I will ask the students if they have any remaining questions before passing out the
test.
4. As the students take the test I will read each question and walk around the room to
ensure students are on track.
5. After taking the test students will turn in their test for me to grade.
6. Once all the tests have been turned in I will pass out a honey bee coloring activity for
the students to complete at the end of the day.
Accommodations:
IEP: Students will have questions read to them and will have the opportunity to use triggers
throughout the test.
