STATICALLY INDETERMINATE SHAFTS

Objectives:
• To explain how to analyze the problems
related to the statically indeterminate
shafts subjected to torques
ANALYSIS OF STATICALLY INDETERMINATE
TORQUE-LOADED SHAFTS
Let us consider a shaft fixed at its both ends and subjected to
a torque T, as shown below:

Let us consider the FBD of the above shaft, as shown below:

• From the FBD of the shaft, it is clear that there
are two unknowns TA and TB, whereas there is
only one equilibrium equation.
• Therefore, the given shaft is an example of one-
degree statically indeterminate member
• For getting the one extra equation for solving for
TA and TB, the following compatibility condition
has to be applied: A/B = 0
ANALYSIS OF STATICALLY INDETERMINATE
TORQUE-LOADED SHAFTS
Applying equilibrium equation to the FBD of shaft:

Eq. 1

Applying compatibility of shaft:

Eq. 2

Values of TA and TB can be determined by solving Eq. 1 and Eq. 2

simultaneously.

PROBLEM # 3

The shaft is made from a solid steel section AB and a

tubular portion made of steel and having a brass core. If
it is fixed to a rigid support at A, and a torque of T = 75
N.m is applied to it at C, determine the angle of twist
that occurs at C and compute the maximum shear stress
and maximum shear strain in the brass and steel. Take
Gst = 75 GPa, Gbr = 37.5 GPa. .
