A. Preparation

Good morning class

Good morning Sir!
Let us pray first
(One pupil will lead the prayer)
(Checking of Attendance)
Say present

Do you have any idea about Geology?

None sir
How about the Structure of the Earth?
None sir
In advance of our lesson, I will show some pictures
related to Geology (Structure of the Earth)

What are your observations on the pictures?

It is all about the different parts of the earth sir.
Very Good!

B. Presentation

Before we start can you name some type of rocks?

(The pupils will now give their ideas)
These are the Igneous, metamorphic and
sedimentary rocks. Did you get it class?
Yes sir!
Our topic for today is Geology (Structure of the
Earth)

Are you ready to listen now class?

Yes sir!
C. Comparison and Abstraction

Today we are going to study about the structure of

the earth.

Kindly read the definition of Geology.

(The pupils will now begin to read)
Geology- it is the study of the earth and how it
changes.

Did you understand it class?

Yes sir!
There are also 2 main types of Geology.

Physical Geology- deals with the study of the

physical features of the earth and the processes
acting on them.

Can you give some examples?

(The pupils will now give their ideas)
This includes the rocks, minerals, plate tectonics,
earthquake, volcanoes etc.

Did you understand it class?

Yes sir!
The second one is Historical Geology- it is the study
of the history of the earth. It includes subdiciplines
such as paleontology.
What is Paleontology sir?
I will discuss it to you later class.
Yes sir!
We also have the Major Subdiciplines

Kindly read it class.

(The pupils will now begin to read)
Minerology- a science dealing with minerals, their
crystallography, properties, classification and the
ways of distinguishing them.

Can you name some minerals class?

(The pupils will now give their ideas)
Petrology- a science that deals with the origin,
history, occurrence,, structure, chemical
composition and classification of rocks.

Can you name the different types of rocks that I

gave you a while ago class?
Igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock sir.
Very good!

Geomography- is the study of the earth’s surface

processes and landforms.
Sir, how many percent does water covers into the
earth’s surface?
The earth’s surface 70 percent is covered with water
and the remaining 30 percent is taken up by the
seven continental land masses.

Did you understand it class?

Yes sir!
Paleontology- scientific study of life of the geologic
past that involves the analysis of plant and animal
fossils, including those of microscopic size,
preserved in rocks.

Do you understand class?

Yes sir!
Can you give some prehistoric animals and plants
that can be found their fossils?
(The pupils will now give their ideas)
Stratigraphy- scientific discipline concerned with the
description of rock successions and their
interpretation in terms of a general time scale.
Sir, what does stratigraphy used for?
It is primarily used in the study of sedimentary and
layer volcanic rocks (Study of rock layers)

Did you understand class?

Yes sir!
Engineering Geology- also called geological
engineering.
-the application of the science of geology to the
understanding of geologic phenomena and the
engineering solution of geologic hazards and other
geologic problems for society.
Sir, what does an engineering geologist do?
Engineering geologist are responsible for identifying
the geological factors that could affect construction
projects.
Sir, how about the importance of engineering
geology?
One of the most important roles as an engineering
geologist is the study of landforms and earth
processes to identify potential geological and
associated human made hazards that may have a
significant impact on civil structures and human
development.

Did you understand class?

Yes sir!
Is there any other questions?
None sir
Sedimentology- encompasses the study of modern
sediments such as sand, silt and clay and the
processes that result in their formation (erosions
and weathering)
Sir, what does sedimentologist do?
Sedimentologist are a type of geologist that examine
certain rock types but usually soil from variety of
areas(including sand and silt)
Sir, what is the main goal of sedimentary geology?
The main goal of sedimentary geology is to interpret
the origin and distribution of sedimentary rocks in
terms of the physic-chemical and biological
processes that led to their information.

Did you understand class?

Yes sir!
Very good!

The Structure of the Earth

Three Major Parts

1. Lithosphere- land part or earth solid sphere
consisting mainly of massive rocks.
Sir, what does lithosphere made of?
The lithosphere is earth outermost layer, composed
of rocks in the crust and upper mantle that behave
as brittle solids.
Sir, what is the importance of lithosphere?
The lithosphere provides the solid surface necessary
for terrestrial organisms.

Do you understand class?

Yes sir!
2. Hydrosphere- water part or water sphere.
Sir, why is the hydrosphere impotant?
The major importance of hydrosphere is that water
sustains various life form and plays an important
role in ecosystem and the atmosphere.

Do you understand class?

Yes sir!
3. Atmosphere- air part or the sphere of vapor.
Sir, what does the atmosphere made of?
Earth’s atmosphere protect and sustains the planets
in habitants by providing warmth and absorbing
harmful solar rays.

Do you understand class?

Yes sir!
Very good!
Three Main Parts of the Earth

1. Crust- topmost layer of the earth.

Sir, what does earth crust made of?
It is made up of mostly oxygen, silicon, aluminum,
iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium.

Any other questions?

None sir
2. Mantle- thickest layer of the earth.
Sir, what does the mantle made of?
It is made up of rock containing silicon, iron,
magnesium, aluminum, oxygen and other minerals.

Did you understand class?

Yes sir!
3. Core- earth’s core is very hot, very dense center of
our planet. The ball shaped core lies beneath the
cool, brittle crust and the most solid mantle.
Sir, what is the core made of?
It’s made mostly of a combination(called an alloy) of
iron and nickel, along with small amount of other
dense elements like gold, platinum and uranium.
Sir, why is earth’s core important?
Erath’s core is important for three main reasons:

1. it is responsible for the generation of earth’s

magnetic field;
2. it contains information regarding the earliest
history of accretion of the planet; and
3. thermal and compositional features established
when the core formed have largely controlled the
subsequent.

Any other questions class?

None sir
D. Generalization

Did you understand our topic for today class?

Yes sir!
Any other questions about the topic?
None sir
What is geology again class?
Geology is the study of the earth and how it was made
and how it changes sir.
Very good!
How about the three major parts of the earth?
Lithosphere, Hydrosphere and Atmosphere sir.
The three main parts of the earth?
Crust, mantle and core sir.
Very good!

E. Application

I will divide you into two groups. Each group will

describe the characteristics of the structure of the
earth. The three major parts and three main parts of
the earth.
(The pupils will now go to their designated groups)
IV. Evaluation

Prepare your pencil and a 1 half sheet of paper we

will having a sort quiz today. I will distribute the test
questions to each of you.
(The pupils will now bring out their pencils and
papers)
Identify and Enumerate the following:

1. It is the study of the earth and how it was made

and how it changes.

2. What are the 3 major parts of the earth?

3. What are the main parts of the earth?

(The pupils will now begin to answer the given
questions)
V. Assignment and Agreement

Bring any kind of rocks or stones tomorrow we will

use it for our next topic.
Yes sir!
