ANNEXURE TO MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING

RESEARCH PROJECT GROUPS AND SUPERVISOR

This document is an annexure to S2007/476B – Statement of Principles for Postgraduate Supervision. It is expected that all
groups sign the Principles document with their supervisor and that the following annexure be completed with specific
arrangements, There should be 3 copies of these documents: one for the group, one for the supervisor and one for the Research
Project course Coordinator. Signed copies should be handed in within two weeks of group allocation.

We hereby confirm that all of us have read, understood and signed the statement of principles for
postgraduate supervision. In addition to the overall principles we have made the following agreements:

THE SUPERVISION ARRANGEMENTS:

Please refer to the course time table and due dates.


B1 Supervisor’s expectations – turnaround time
The supervisor should specify his/her expectations of what turnaround time is acceptable to give
feedback on electronically submitted work. These agreements does not supersede the committed
dates for feedback and marks on formal assignments.

B2 Supervisor’s plans and commitments:


The supervisor should set out what his/her plans for providing supervision, including the pattern and
intended frequency of meetings:

Meet bi-weekly to discuss progress. WhatsApp group calls or MS Teams to be used for meetings

B3 Supervision arrangements:
(a) Expected absence of supervisor(s) on leave/sabbaticals or conference attendance during the
next year that exceeds 3 days. Where any planned absences coincide with due dates for this
course, explicit arrangements regarding approval and signoff should be made.

Online meetings to be arranged

(b) Arrangements should the supervisor not be available (planned or unplanned)

WatsApp communication, email communication

(c) The supervisor agree to provide the students with other planned absences in electronic
communication and that alternative arrangements will be made so that the students are not
negatively impacted on by absences or lack of availability of their supervisor.

GROUP ARRANGEMENTS:

C1 Should there be any specific arrangements based on the circumstances of the group such as planned
absences etc. This should be clearly stated here

• If it happens that one of the group members or group is absent, we will inform the supervisor,
carry on the business of the day and the present members will brief the absentee at later
stage and ask for inputs as part of contributing to the group no later than 2 days after the
meeting that this particular individual was absent from, provided that his absence was
reasonable.

in line with the course timetable.

MEETING DATES: we'll meet once a week via Ms teams and that will be Thursdays as we have no
lectures and Saturdays on the weeks of submission as most of the submission dates are on Sundays.

supervisor, including arrangements about the order of listing of co-authors:

D2 Copyright:
Copyright in a Research Project vests in the authors, subject to the rights WITS has in terms of the
general rules.

Students often use data that belongs to the University, or a research group. Any issues relating to
data ownership should be noted below.
