Leadership focused on Human Flourishing

The dilemma of the neighborhood board

To begin with the self-diagnosis based on my knowledge, I can identify that there is a
clear problem in the neighborhood. Being a new neighborhood, the problems and
responsibility that come with being a leader of my neighborhood board is wide since it
includes an additional, unpaid activity that consumes both time and energy. The leader
of this organization should be in charge of managing the necessary solutions for the
problems that arise in the neighborhood.
Emotionally, I can understand and empathize with the annoyance of the neighbors
since, indeed, it is annoying that cleaning and lighting services are not available.
Likewise, the issue related to neighborhood safety turns out to be of high interest since
it compromises the integrity and well-being of the people who live there. I could also
mention that the neighbors must understand and empathize with me since I am fulfilling
an additional function that consumes part of the resources that I use every day to
provide solutions to my neighborhood. Likewise, they must be aware that I try to do my
best for the neighborhood since it is also the place of my residence and that the
problems that affect them also affect me.
The action plan that I will develop focuses on strengthening communication between
neighborhood members and sharing and managing responsibilities among neighbors.
First, I would carry out a self-evaluation of the performance that I have had as a leader
of the neighborhood board. I would identify what my mistakes and successes have been
throughout the time that I have been leading this organization. Second, I would call a
face-to-face meeting where all members of the neighborhood can participate. Here I
would ask them to give me feedback on the responsibilities that I have developed.
Likewise, I request that we define specific communication times and spaces so that
neighbors can transmit their concerns, problems, and complaints about the
neighborhood. With the help of this I will try to respect my time and space, which will
help me to develop a better job. Third, I will communicate clearly and directly that I am
committed to this position and even though it turns out to be a complicated task, I will
be fully involved in trying to find solutions to the problems facing the neighborhood.
With this, I will try to give an example of the activities and attitudes that I believe are
correct to generate interest and empathy with the neighbors since in the future, some
of them will be in the same position as me. Finally, with the help of good communication,
I will try to form committees that help me manage certain specific problems. For
example, I will form a committee that is in charge of supervising that the lighting in the
streets is working properly at least once every two weeks, also they will be in charge of
informing me if there is a problem in order to provide an immediate solution. On the
other hand, the cleaning committee will have to contact the local authorities to confirm
that the garbage collectors in the public sector are carrying out their work properly.
I believe that with the help of an adequate self-evaluation and an action plan where
communication and teamwork stand out, both the problems of the neighborhood, and
the problems that afflict me because I am the leader of the neighborhood board, will be
solved in an effective way. Given my personality, resigning from the position would not
be an option to consider, so I would focus on developing strategies that help fulfill my
responsibilities and the development of my neighborhood.
