It truly takes a village and given the

reality we are living in now, that saying
takes on an even greater
importance. During this altered time of
school, so many community organizations
have stepped forward to help wrap
Kalamazoo’s arms around our students
making sure they are successful no matter
their needs.
From Schupan and Sons donating chromebooks in the spring, to
our partnership with the city of Kalamazoo and the Kalamazoo
Public Library providing internet hotspots for students lacking
connection, our community has come together to help us ensure
all students have access to education. Community in Schools
continue to support our students with both basic needs and with
access to mental health supports during this strenuous time. The
Kalamazoo Youth Development Network, Metro Transit and the
City of Kalamazoo through the foundation of Excellence work to
ensure that students have access to transportation for jobs and
educational supports. Numerous churches in the community have
offered supplies, labor and just plain on-going support to help us
reach all students. The Kalamazoo Promise has shifted its
operations to help better meet our students where they are in
this virtual world while still focused on delivering them the best School Lunch Pick Up at Loy Norrix

The United Nations International Day of Peace

For the last 4 years, in honor of the International Day of Peace, Loy Norrix Peacejammers have focused on a variety of topics that
enhance the world around us and support the people we interact with. Our observance of this day included students from
surrounding schools, guest speakers and even professors from KVCC, WMU, and Kalamazoo College. We have incorporated the
study of Global Climate Change, Nelson Mandela and apartheid, and the teaching of Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu. With virtual
schooling this trimester, this annual observance in our school auditorium couldn’t occur. After mentioning this special day to my
students in our google classroom meet session they were encouraged to do a random act of kindness to make their current world
around them at home better.
