In this unit you examine the first prescribed issue, ‘The value of education’ (Nilai pendidikan). You
will begin by considering the importance of a school education, before examining the 3 sub-topics
listed below. You will also be shown how to present a point of view orally. You will learn how to
plan, scaffold and then flesh out your responses to examination style questions for speaking skills.

What is education like for Indonesian students? You may have some knowledge about schooling in
Indonesia from your study of this topic in the Continuers course. Read the following short article
which explains some aspects of the school system in Indonesia.

<H3>Sekolah di Indonesia</H3>

Sekolah di Indonesia dibagi menjadi 3 tingkat:

Sebelum masuk SD anak-anak bisa bersekolah di TK (Taman Kanak-Kanak), walaupun ini tidak wajib.

Sesudah lulus SMA murid-murid bisa melanjutkan ke:

 Sekolah Tinggi, misalnya STIKOM (Sekolah Tinggi Komputer) atau STT (Sekolah Tinggi Teologia).

Sekolah di Indonesia juga dibagi menjadi Sekolah Negeri yang dijalankan oleh pemerintah, sekolah
swasta atau sekolah dengan afiliasi agama, misalnya SK (Sekolah Katholik), SKr (Sekolah Kristen),
Madrasah (Islam) atau Pesantren (Islam) dan lain-lain.

Murid yang bersekolah di Sekolah Negeri tidak perlu membayar uang sekolah, tetapi kalau bersekolah
di sekolah swasta mereka harus membayar ongkos yang cukup mahal.

Walaupun bersekolah di sekolah negeri gratis, anak-anak dari keluarga yang sangat miskin, khususnya
dari desa dan kota kecil, tidak bisa bersekolah karena mereka harus membantu orang tuanya bekerja.

Pada tahun 2013, Menteri Pendidikan & Kebudayaan Muhammad Nuh merencanakan Wajib Belajar 12
tahun untuk anak-anak Indonesia. Sebelumnya telah dilakukan Wajib Belajar 9 tahun (Wajib Belajar
sampai SMP). Diharapkan pada tahun 2020, 97 persen anak-anak akan lulus SMA atau SMK.

Apa fungsi pendidikan sekolah bagi anak-anak?

1. Melatih kemampuan akademis

Dengan melatih kemampuan mengingat, menganalisa, memecahkan masalah dan

mengembangkan logika melalui pendidikan sekolah, diharapkan seseorang akan memiliki
kemampuan akademis yang baik. Ingat, masa depan yang akan kita jalani akan lebih sulit,
maka diperlukan perjuangan, kerja keras dan ilmu pengetahuan.

2. Memperkuat mental, fisik dan disiplin

Mengharuskan pelajar mengikuti peraturan sekolah dapat meningkatkan kedisiplinan.

Dengan banyaknya pelajaran dan tugas-tugas sekolah, pelajar harus bisa membagi waktu
dengan baik dan ini bisa memperkuat mental dan fisik pelajar.

3. Memperkenalkan tanggung jawab

Tanggung jawab anak adalah belajar sedangkan tanggung jawab orang tua adalah mencari
nafkah. Seorang anak yang menjalankan tugas dan kewajibannya dengan baik dengan
mengikuti pendidikan sekolah dengan rajin akan membanggakan keluarga dan guru.

4. Membangun jiwa sosial dan jaringan pertemanan

Banyaknya murid yang bersekolah bersama akan memperluas hubungan sosial anak. Dengan
memiliki teman, kebutuhan sosial yang adalah kebutuhan dasar manusia dapat dipenuhi
dengan baik.

 5. Sebagai identitas diri

Lulus dari sebuah institusi pendidikan sekolah, seorang siswa akan menerima sertifikat atau
ijazah khusus yang menunjukkan bahwa siswa itu sudah tamat. Dan kalau ingin mendapat
pekerjaan, ijazah akan membantu untuk mendapat pekerjaan yang diinginkan.

6. Alat mengembangkan diri dan berkreativitas

Seorang siswa dapat mengikuti berbagai program ekstrakurikuler sebagai pelengkap

kegiatan akademis agar dapat mengembangkan bakat dan minat dalam dirinya. Semakin
banyak memiliki keahlian dan daya kreativitas, semakin baik pula kualitas seseorang. Sekolah
adalah tempat di mana seseorang bisa mengembangkan diri secara optimal.

<H2>The HSC Examination: Speaking skills</H2>

In the Higher School Certificate you will speak in Indonesian for approximately 3 minutes. It will be in
the form of a monologue in response to a question that relates to one of the prescribed issues. You will
be given 7 minutes to plan your response, during which you will write your ideas in a small box
provided on the question paper.

The following information shows you some exemplar responses to a monologue at the HSC level.
These responses will probably seem to be beyond your ability at this stage of your study but they
indicate the standard of monologue required for high achievement in the HSC. Carefully read through
Emily’s and Grace’s monologues and use them throughout your Extension course study as exemplars
upon which to model your own planning and speaking.

Tidak bisa disangkal bahwa sukses tergantung pada pendidikan. Dalam dunia modern ini
dengan globalisasi dan perubahan dalam masyakarat yang semakin cepat, diperlukan
orang-orang yang terus belajar sepanjang hidupnya. Kalau tidak, mereka akan ketinggalan.
Ada banyak alasan yang bisa dikemukakan mengapa saya berpendapat demikian.

Yang pertama, dewasa ini ada banyak saingan untuk mendapat pekerjaan. Ketrampilan
yang diperlukan di dunia pekerjaan - misalnya kreativitas, inovasi, fleksibilitas - didapat dari
sekolah. Maka pendidikan yang cukup tinggi membuka pintu untuk mendapat pekerjaan
yang dicita-citakan. Pekerjaan yang bergengsi membuat status sosial seseorang lebih tinggi
dan mereka dipandang oleh masyarakat.

menikmati kehidupan dengan senang. Sebaliknya, orang yang tidak berpendidikan
seringkali mengalami kehidupan yang sulit dan tidak memuaskan.

Dan seperti kita semua ketahui, pendidikan membawa sukses dan kepuasan karena kita
selalu ditantang untuk berpikir kritis, kreatif dan inovatif. Dengan kata lain, kita harus
menjaga kesehatan mental untuk meraih kesuksesan. Statistik dan riset menunjukkan
bahwa orang-orang yang tidak menjaga kesehatan mental tidak merasa senang, puas dan
bahagia. Masalah ini semakin parah saat ini. Jadi peran pendidikan sangat penting untuk
mengatasi problem ini sehingga semua orang bisa mencapai potensi mereka dan menjadi
berhasil.

Salah satu hak azasi manusia adalah mendapat pendidikan. Tanpa pendidikan, mustahil
seseorang bisa menjadi sukses.

Dari penjelasan di atas, bisa dibuktikan bahwa pendidikan berperan sangat penting untuk
mencapai kesuksesan. Pendidikan membuka kesempatan unbtuk mendapat pekerjaan yang
tinggi dan bergengsi dan ini akan memberi kepuasan baik secara mental maupun secara
material.

Grace’s monologue

Saya sama sekali tidak sependapat dengan pernyataan tersebut. Menurut hemat saya,
definisi sukses adalah keseimbangan antara kesehatan mental, rohani dan sosial. Harus
diakui bahwa pendidikan salah satu unsur yang penting dalam mencapai hal tersebut,
tetapi bukan pendidikan saja yang menjamin sukses seseorang.

Saya sendiri bukanlah tipe orang yang mengutamakan harta benda. Saya berpendapat
bahwa sukses sejati berakar pada hubungan erat dengan Tuhan, keluarga dan teman-
teman. Kita diciptakan sebagai manusia sosial yang mendapat kepuasan dari hubungan
yang berarti.

Ada banyak manfaat dari hubungan yang sehat. Kalau mengalami kesulitan, akan lebih
baik kalau kita berbicara dengan teman dan mendengarkan nasihat mereka. Hubungan
yang erat memudahkan jalan hidup kita karena kita bisa saling mendukung dan membantu
satu sama lain.

Sebenarnya, pendidikan yang tidak dilengkapi dengan perkembangan moral dan spiritual
yang benar, malah berpengaruh negatif dalam masyarakat. Kita bisa melihat dari masalah
