ANSWER THE FOLLOWING: -

1. Raman was very surprised the see the porters at railway station. He was
curious to know as how they could walk easily carrying so much of load
over his head. What is the probable reason behind that? [2]

5. A group of pupil placed pieces of metal wire in different salt solutions. They
recorded their observation in the table below.

a) From these observations, Write the order of reactivity of the four


metals, copper, lead, silver and zinc from the most reactive to the least
reactive metal. [1]
b) The pupils then dipped a new piece of each of the metal wire into dilute
hydrochloric acid. Only one of the metals reacted. Which metal was

9. The Statue of Liberty is a landmark every American recognizes. When this
statue was first delivered from France, its appearance was not green. It was
brown, the colour of its copper “skin” as shown in the figure (a) and figure(b)
shows exposure of the Statue resulting in the formation of the green patina seen
today. Cleaning the green patina from the statue of Liberty could do more harm
than good, according to the National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis in a
statement to AM New York. [3]

a) Why did the Statue change colour from brown to green?


b) Identify the green colour patina substance on the Statue. Write its chemical
formula
c) You must have seen green patina on copper vessels being cleaned with lemon
or tamarind juice. Explain why these sour substances are effective in cleaning?
