I. INTRODUCTON
According to Class NK, a bilge system is required to be provided that act as a drainage system
in the event of flooding in every watertight compartment except a compartment in which a
pumping system is already provided. The purpose of bilge system to be provided is to prevent
the event of sinking when the ship is ongoing at seas, the possible causes are collision,
grounding, watersplash, leaks on welding roots, leaks on piping system, leaks on ship plate.

II. OBJECTIVES
The things that we must understand about Bilge System are :
1. Understand the bilge system inside the ship.
2. Calculate the diameter of the main bilge and the branch bilge in ship.
3. Determining the capacity and head of bilge pump according Class NK Part D Machinery
Installation Chapter 13.5 Bilge and Ballast Piping Edition 2017.
4. Choosing the pipe and pump which match to the calculation above.
5. Drawing the design of bilge system.

IV. LIST OF ABBREVATIONS

HLs : Head loss mayor suction side (m)
Hld : Head loss discharge side (m)
Mls : Head loss minor at suction side (m)
Mld : Head loss minor at discharge side (m)
dH : Calculated inside diameter of main bilge pipe (mm)
B : Moulded breadth of the ship (m)
L : length between perpendiculars at the extremities (m)
D : moulded depth to the bulkhead deck (m)
C : length of compartment (m)

V. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Bilge system that sufficient for pumping out or draining every compartment that categorized
as a void or empty space in which no pumping system is installed in that compartment in
example fore peak tank (when not used as ballast tank), cofferdam, pump room, wing tank,
engine room, after peak tank and any other void or empty compartment. The bilge system
according to class NK’ terminology is consist of 4 type of pipe, which are :
1. Main Bilge Pipe : Pipe that connect to a bilge pump in which all branch
bilge pipe are connected.
2. Branch Bilge Pipe : Pipe that connect to a bilge main pipe from bilge suction.
3. Direct Bilge Suction Pipe : Bilge suction which is connected directly to bilge pump.

4. Emergency Bilge Suction Pipe : Bilge suction which is to be used in an emergency and
connected directly to a bilge pump.

VI. DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

1. Piping System Class Requirement (Class NK Part D Machinery Installation Chapter 13.5
Bilge and Ballast Piping Edition 2017)
a. Diameter of the main bilge pipe
(attachment No. 1 Calculation Bilge System)
b. Branch bilge line
(attachment No. 1 Calculation Bilge System)
c. Material
Steel Galvanized Pipe or Cast Iron accepted for temperatures up to 350 0C
d. Pipe Class and Thickness
Class II or III

2. Pump
a. Type of Pump
A centrifugal pump is a rotor dynamic pump that uses a rotating impeller to increase
the pressure and flow rate of a fluid. Centrifugal pumps are the most common type of
pump used to move liquids through a piping system. The fluid enters the pump impeller
along a near to the rotating axis and is accelerated are typically used for large
discharge through smaller heads.
b. Class Requirement
• Capacity of bilge pump
(attachment No. 1 Calculation Bilge System)
• Head Pump
(attachment No. 1 Calculation Bilge System)

3. Valves and Fitting (Class NK Part D Machinery Installation Chapter 12 Pipes, Valves, Pipe
Fittings and Auxiliaries Edition 2017)
a. Non Return Valve
Has same function with globe valve, working in very high pressure and just has one-
way direction. Usually this valve is used in order after the pump and another lines that
the fluids shall not back through the same line or just one-way direction.
b. Filter
The sea water and fresh water systems on board ship are provided with line filters in
order to trap the solid impurities flowing in the system. Normally the sea water sides
has more number of filters incorporated in the line as compared to the fresh water
system as the later is a closed system. The different applications for water filters are:
• Bilge Line Filter
All the bilge well suctions are provided with a strainer as the well containts the
maximum solid contamination. The filter may have a bucket screen or a plate screen
to trap solid impurities.
c. Butterfly Valve
CALCULATION AND Doc. No 02 - 42 20 DN002- BG
SPECIFICATION OF Rev. No 00
BILGE SYSTEM Page 03
`
A butterfly valve is a valve which can be used for isolating or regulating flow. The
closing mechanism takes the form of a disk, which allows for quick shut off. Butterfly
valve are generally favored because they are lower in cost to other valve designs as
well as being lighter in weight, meaning less support is required. Used for stop valve
only, for low working pressure. In this system, butterfly valve used in order before the
pump, and as a connecting to another equipment to make a standby function.
