Products of complex numbers in polar form

If 𝑧1 = 𝑟𝑙 ( cos 𝜃1 + 𝑖 sin 𝜃1 ) and 𝑧2 = 𝑟2 ( cos 𝜃2 + 𝑖 sin 𝜃2 ) , then the product of these numbers is given as:
𝑧1 𝑧2 = 𝑟1 𝑟2 [ cos (𝜃1 + 𝜃2 ) + 𝑖 sin (𝜃1 + 𝜃2 )]
𝑧1 𝑧2 = 𝑟1 𝑟2 𝑐𝑖𝑠(𝜃1 + 𝜃2 )
Notice that the product calls for multiplying the moduli and adding the angles.

Quotients of complex numbers in polar form

If 𝑧1 = 𝑟1 ( cos 𝜃1 + 𝑖 sin 𝜃1 ) and 𝑧2 = 𝑟2 ( cos 𝜃2 + 𝑖 sin 𝜃2 ) , then the quotient ofthese numbers is
𝑧1 𝑟1
= cos 𝜃1 − 𝜃2 + 𝑖 sin 𝜃1 − 𝜃2 𝑧2 ≠ 0
𝑧2 𝑟2
𝑧1 𝑟1
= 𝑐𝑖𝑠(𝜃1 − 𝜃2 ), 𝑧2 ≠ 0
𝑧2 𝑟2
Notice that the moduli are divided, and the angles are subtracted.
Multiplication: If 𝑧1 = 𝑟1𝑒 𝑖𝜃1 and 𝑧2 = 𝑟2 𝑒 𝑖𝜃2 then
𝑧1 𝑧2 = 𝑟1 𝑟2 𝑒 𝑖(𝜃1 +𝜃2 ) .
This is what mathematicians call trivial to see, just write the multiplication down. In words,
the formula says the for 𝑧1 𝑧2 the magnitudes multiply and the arguments add.

Division: Again, it’s trivial that

𝑟1 𝑒 𝑖𝜃1 𝑟1 𝑖(𝜃 −𝜃 )
𝑖𝜃
= 𝑒 1 2.
𝑟2 𝑒 2 𝑟2
