Unit Summary
This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to carry out OHS requirements through safe
work practices at any on or off-site construction workplace. It requires the performance of work in a safe
manner through awareness of risks and work requirements, and the planning and performance of safe
work practices with concern for personal safety and the safety of others.
This unit of competency covers fundamental OHS necessary to undertake work tasks within any sector in
the construction industry. It includes the identification of hazardous materials, including asbestos, and
compliance with legislated work safety practices. It does not cover removal of asbestos, which is a
licensed activity.
The unit relates directly to the general induction training program specified by the National Code of
Practice for Induction for Construction Work (ASCC 2007) required to enter a construction work site.
Completion of unit CPCCOHS1001A covers this requirement.

CPCCOHS2001A – Apply OHS requirements, policies and procedures in the
construction industry
For this unit, you will be taking on the role of a painter and decorator. You work for a company called
Paint Innovations that services new residential homes, repainting of older homes, and some
commercial buildings. You are responsible for ensuring that your work does not impact on the health
or safety of others who are working in the same area. Additionally, you will need to be able to
respond to emergency situations without panicking, and to communicate with other workers despite
the conditions (e.g. hand signals for people who cannot hear).

Assessment 1: Identify hazardous materials found on-site, and associated safe work practices.
Find 3 safety data sheets (SDS) within your workplace, or online. You must find 1 ACM (asbestos
containing material), 1 for a paint, and 1 for a solvent or cleaning product. Using these data sheets,
complete the templates that have been provided in the appendices (refer to appendix A).

Assessment 3: Apply emergency procedures in response to a simulation.
An emergency situation will be provided to you by your assessor on the day of your simulation. Using
this information, and the simulated environment, you will need to demonstrate your ability to
manage an emergency.

Your demonstration will require you to:
