b. Motivation

I will be showing you some pictures and

determine the shape that it represents.
We see a clock, ma’am.
It is square in shape, ma’am.

What can you see in the picture?

What do you think is the shape of the clock?

We see a clock, basketball court.

It is rectangle in shape, ma’am.
What can you see in the picture?
What do you think is the shape of the
basketball court?

Do you ever wonder how much space does a

shape takes?

C. Presentation of the Lesson

Let us look at the shape of these figures again.

The space inside the shape is what we call

Area.

Yes, ma’am.
Do you think we can measure the area of a
clock and basketball court?

Yes, that is correct. We can measure the area.

To measure the Area, we make use of the

units of measurement like cm, m, km, ft and
etc.

The Units of Area are the Square of the Units

of Length.
1. cm x cm = square centimeters (cm2)
2. m x m = square meters (m2)
3. ft. x ft. = square feet (ft2)

For example, this clock, since this is a square,

let us find the area of a square:

7 cm

7 cm

Since this is a square, it only means that all

four sides of a square are equal. Each side is 7
cm (cm is the unit used as measurement).

To measure the area of a square, we need to

multiply both sides:

A= S x S or S2
A= 7cm x 7 cm
A=49 cm2

Therefore, the area of this shape is 49cm2.

Now, let us have the area of a rectangle:

length

width

To measure the area of a rectangle, the rule is

to multiply the length and width.
7m

4m

Here, the length is 7m and the width is 4m.

So, to calculate the area of this rectangle, we
multiply 7m by 4m. 7 x 4 is equals to 28.

A= length x width

A= L x W
A= 7m x 4m
A= 28 m2

Therefore, the area of this rectangle is 28 m2.

Let us have other examples:

1. Since, this is a square, what formula are

going to use?

9m

9m
The formula for the area of square,
A= S x S or S2.

A= S x S
A= 9m x 9m
A=

What do you think will be the answer?

2. Since, this is a rectangle, what formula are

going to use?
15 cm
The answer is A= 81m2
8 cm
The formula for the area of square,
A= L x W.

A= l x w
A= 15cm x 8cm
A=

What do you think will be the answer?

D. Application

Now, let us have a group activity. I will group

you into 4 groups and each should pick a
representative to present their work in front of
the class. The answer is A= 120 cm2

For your activity, you are going to complete

the color of the circle by answering the
following. Find the appropriate color base on
the correct answer.

The first one to finish the activity will receive

a prize.

16 ft.
14 cm

8 ft.
20 m 11 cm
7m

121cm2 196 cm2

140 m2 128 ft.2

Generalization

How do we calculate the area of a square?

How do we calculate the area of a rectangle?

We use the formula for the area of a square,

A= S x S.

We use the formula for the area of a

rectangle, A= L x W.
